Using
Service machine operation
The FDRPASVM service machine is designed to be run as a disconnected virtual machine. Under normal circumstances, you should be able to operate the service machine indirectly by auto-logging the FDRPASVM service machine and by using the FDRPAS CMS command to send SWAP requests and control commands.
If you log on to the FDRPASVM service machine, the STOP and QUIT control commands can be entered from the service machine’s virtual console. You can also observe the console output that contains messages from all the service machines running tasks.
The FDRPASVM service machine automatically attaches the target devices to be monitored for SWAP operations. Target devices are automatically detached at the completion of a SWAP function, or when the monitor is stopped with a STOP command before a SWAP function has been initiated. Target devices remain attached to the service machine after a SIMSWAPMON or SWAPDUMP function under the assumption that a SWAP function will be performed at some point after a successful SIMSWAPMON and/or SWAPDUMP functions. If a SWAP operation is not performed, the target devices can be released by using the STOP command to stop the monitor. After completion of a SWAP function, the original source device is automatically detached as it has switched places with the target device. No manual attaching or linking of devices is required.
To be used as a target device, the device must be online, free, and a device supported for HyperSwap by z/VM. Please keep in mind that while the z/OS monitor requires its target devices be offline but accessible to z/OS, the FDRPASVM monitor must attach its target devices to its virtual machine. This can not be done if the devices are offline to z/VM. Devices that are attached to any virtual machine, including the FDRPASVM service machine, or attached to the system, are considered in use and are not eligible as a target device. A source device must be a device supported for HyperSwap by z/VM.
Service machine console files
All CP, CMS, and service machine messages are spooled to the virtual machine’s console if the PROFILE EXEC contains the CP SPOOL CONSOLE START command. When the FDRPASVM virtual machine is logged off, all of the console output goes to a reader file that appears in the FDRPASVM virtual reader. To create a console reader file without logging off the service machine, enter the #CP SPOOL CONSOLE CLOSE command from the FDRPASVM virtual console.
New installations
Proceed to Using the FDRPAS CMS Command to complete the new installation.
