Getting started

This section provides information about how to install, use, and understand FDRPASVM (FDR Plug and Swap™ for z/VM). FDRPAS makes data migration from older to newer disks easier. It can move individual disk volumes or an entire disk array to new storage devices without disrupting processing. When the FDRPAS swap of a volume is complete, the volume resides completely on the new device, and the original device is no longer required.

What Is FDRPASVM?

FDRPASVM provides an FDRPAS monitor for z/VM systems. This extends the power of FDRPAS to both z/OS and z/VM. When the FDRPASVM monitor is active, the FDRPAS z/OS Main SWAP task can simultaneously coordinate SWAP functions on both z/VM and z/OS systems. Without the FDRPASVM monitor, FDRPAS users would have to add EXCLUDE statements to the FDRPAS SWAP task jobs for all of the z/VM systems that have access to the DASD volume being swapped.

FDRPASVM allows users to swap active z/VM user volumes. This enables the non-disruptive migration of volumes containing minidisks, full pack minidisks, and dedicated volumes for CMS users, Linux for Systemz, and other guest operating systems such as z/VSE and z/TPF. FDRPASVM also supports CP-Owned volumes so that an entire running z/VM system or Single System Image (SSI) can be migrated while it is running.

The physical devices involved in a SWAP must be supported by the underlying z/VM HyperSwap support, and by the FDRPAS z/OS main SWAP task. Because of this requirement, FBA devices can not be swapped as they are not currently supported on z/OS and are not supported by z/VM HyperSwap.

The FDRPASVM monitor supports the three main functions initiated by the FDRPAS z/OS main SWAP task:

  • SWAP - Copy volumes then swap them at the end of the operation
  • SWAPDUMP - Create point-in-time backups of volumes
  • SIMSWAPMON - Perform extended checking during a simulated Swap

Please refer to the FDRPAS, FDRMOVE, and FDRERASE documentation for a description of these and other functions related to the FDRPAS z/OS SWAP task.

FDRPASVM is supported on all z/VM releases that are generally available and supported by IBM.
