Overview of FDRABR Coexistence with CA Disk

Changes to FDRABR allow FDRABR and CA Disk to process the same volumes and coexist. This allows FDRABR to be used as the backup product and CA Disk to continue being the archival product as well as allowing for a path to migrate CA Disk volumes to FDRABR. Thus, the user is in full control of what volumes to process with FDRABR and has the ability to keep CA Disk for an indefinite time.

Changes to FDRABR provide an OPEN exit to optionally store the following fields in the F1 DSCB that are currently available with CA Disk:

Offset 62 (dec), length 8

Job name (LMJOB) or accounting information (LMACCT) of the job that last modified the data set.

Offset 70 (dec), length 3

Date (LMDATE) that the data set was last modified.

How does the coexistence work

FDRABR provides a CA Disk SVC intercept module that intercepts the CA Disk SVC (usually SVC 244) and determines whether the volume being accessed is managed by FDRABR or CA Disk for backups.

  • If managed by CA Disk, control is passed to the CA Disk SVC to update the DSCB according to CA Disk rules.
  • If managed by FDRABR, the CA Disk SVC is bypassed to prevent it from overlaying the FDRABR backup information in the DSCB. The ABR OPEN exit has already updated the requested fields.

Installation checklist

Use the following checklist as you proceed through the installation. This checklist replaces the checklist in FDR-installation-checklist as it incorporates changes required for installing FDRABR Coexistence with CA Disk. The PRODUCT column indicates to which FDR components the step applies. You need be concerned only about the steps for the components for which you are licensed.
