AUTOPOOL function—Pool automation
The AUTOPOOL function is used to initiate pool automation for pools, SMS storage groups, or SMS pools (see AUTOVOL and AUTOAPPL for automation of volumes and applications).
Pool automation provides the capability to monitor pool space or other attributes and initiate actions when thresholds are exceeded. Unlike other BMC AMI Storage functions, the AUTOPOOL function is initiated through user request rather than during some other process or event. Actions include:
- Submits a job by using a skeleton tailoring facility to perform a batch process on the pool
- Issues events to communicate with TSO users, the system log, the console, BMC AMI Ops Automation, or another automated-operations package
In conjunction with events being issued, BMC AMI Ops Automation Rules can be used to initiate volume-automation solutions for volumes in the pool or data set- automation solutions for data sets in the pool. These solutions can be initiated in a tiered approach, where automated solutions are applied to a pool in steps that are defined in multilevel processing. For more information, see Multilevel-automation-MLA-processing.
You can use the AUTOPOOL console command to initiate volume automation on a list of individual volumes or on volumes in a pool (see AUTOPOOL-command). This console command can be issued by time-driven Rules in BMC AMI Ops Automation or through any mechanism that can issue console commands.
