Data Class Recommendation Report

The Data Class Recommendation Report organizes selected data sets into categories of identical data set attributes, comparable to DFSMS data classes.

This report summarizes data sets by their attributes, showing which sets of attributes would be most useful as data classes. A data class is a list of data set allocation attributes.

See the following sections in this topic for more information:

What you can do with the report

Because DFSMS provides the data class, users do not need to know the physical requirements of data sets.

The following scenarios can help you determine data class recommendations using the Data Class Recommendation Report:

  • Create a data class with these characteristics if 23% of your data sets have the characteristics LRECL=80, BLKSIZE=8000, RECFM=FB, DSORG=PO.
  • Create a data class with these characteristics if 11% of your DASD space is occupied by data sets with the characteristics LRECL=133, BLKSIZE=13300, RECFM=FBA, DSORG=PS, regardless of how many data sets compose that group.

Organization of the report

The Data Class Recommendation Report is organized by DCB attributes: record length, block size, record format, data set organization, space requirements, DSNTYPE, and so on.

Selected data sets are accumulated into attribute categories, and reported in decreasing sort order on count (number of data sets in the category) and size (total size of all data sets in the category).

The size of each category (count and space) is reported by the following methods:

  • Horizontal bar chart
  • Percentage
  • Actual count and size

Usage notes for creating the report

Consider the following information when creating the Data Class Recommendation Report:

  • To limit the reporting of data set attribute categories, specify the following parameters:

    EXCLUDE NUMBER OF DSnn

In this specification, nn specifies the minimum number of data sets in a category. Any group’s DCB attributes with fewer than nn data sets are not reported. This feature allows the report to be restricted to categories of a specific size.

The EXCLUDE MIGRATED selection parameter is ignored for this report. Migrated data sets are not included in the report under any circumstances.

    Important

Because the sort order is data-set count and then data set size, scan the full report for valid potential data classes. A category might be displayed near the end of the report because it comprises only a few data sets. However, those data sets could consume a significant percentage of DASD space making the category a viable data class.

  • The horizontal bar chart is a graphical representation that provides a quick indication of the practicality of a potential data class. A longer bar indicates that more data sets are covered by the data class. For each category, the total count and the total size are represented graphically. Each character represents 2% of the total. Plus characters (+) represent data set count; asterisk characters (*) represent data set size.

Available fields on the report

The following fields are available for the SMS Data Class Recommendation Report:
