Command reference

This section provides a detailed description of each command line utility. Each utility is provided its section, that furnishes information on all command line arguments, general usage, and caveats.

Each program  provides a consistent command line argument. At least one command line argument is necessary for any of the preceding utilities. If one of the utility programs is executed with no arguments, the program always displays the version number and brief help on usage.

  1. Tools that list data (such as the CatMsg, CatDev, and other tools) limit data to a certain number of lines (usually 100 thousand lines of output or less.) This can modified via the -maxcount command line directive, available for most of the tools herein.
  2. Tools generally write exclusively to standard output. The return status of the tool is always zero, regardless of the success or failure of the operation.
  3. The position on the command where the option is used might be pertinent. Such as, the -file and -spec values of the CPars.exe tool MUST begin prior to parse specs.  (Execute the tool with no arguments to see the required syntax.)

At those sites where the cli-bin folder does not exist, or to upgrade existing utilities, you might acquire and add the CLI programs to any BMC Defender Server installation. The software is usually delivered as a self-extracting WinZip file. Administrative logins are required to perform the software installation.
