Installing BMC Defender Ping Monitor adapter

The BMC Defender Ping Monitor adapter is usually delivered as a self-extracting WinZip file. The installation requires a few simple manual installation steps, and no automatic installation is provided or required.

Installation requirements

The optional parameters are as follows:

  • Existing BMC Defender Server installation—Prior to installing the Ping Monitor Adapter, the BMC Defender Server system must be installed on a Windows platform, as discussed in the

    BMC Defender User Manual

     .

  • Disk space requirements—The Ping Monitor Adapter requires no significant disk space beyond the normal footprint of the BMC Defender Server. There is generally no extra disk space load due to this software.
  • CPU requirements—The Ping Monitor Adapter requires little extra CPU requirements. A single process starts the BMC Defender Windows platform, that consumes minimal CPU resources.
  • Firewall requirements—The Ping Monitor Adapter requires that managed devices respond to ICMP ping requests from the BMC Defender Server. This is the normal condition (however, some sites might purposely disable ping responses from devices, and those selected devices are not manageable by BMC Defender).

To ensure proper installation of the program, close all windows and temporarily disable any port blocking or virus scan software on the system. The existing BMC Defender Server process must stop before the installation. Reboot, after installation, is not required.

Basic installation procedure

Use the following procedure to complete the installation:

  1. Obtain the BMC Defender Ping Monitor Adapter, in self-extracting WinZip format.
  2. Stop the BMC Defender Server Framework service and verify using the task manager that all BMC Defender Server background processes have stopped.
  3. Execute the self-extracting WinZip file. This unzips the Ping Monitor Adapter into the BMC Defender Windows Distribution, including all configuration data and executables, and modifies the BMC Defender Server program to start the CO-ping.exe program on system startup.
  4. Restart BMC Defender and configure address groups and other items using the Messages > Adaptors > Ping screen.
  5. Configure other parts of the BMC Defender system, such as threads, alerts, and ticket users to correlate and process the syslog messages that are generated by the Ping Monitor software.

You require administrative logins for performing the software installation.

Windows installation procedure

Complete the following steps to install the BMC Defender Ping Monitor adapter:

  1. Log on to the BMC Defender Server Windows platform using an administrator type login.
  2. Stop the BMC Defender Server processes using the Windows Service Manager, or through the Start and Stop Service utility found in the Windows Start menu. Verify with the Windows Task Manager that all BMC Defender processes have stopped.
  3. Obtain and execute the co-n-n-n-ping.exe package, extracting files to the directory location where BMC Defender is installed. (The default installation directory is C:\Program Files\BMC Software\BMC Defender.)

After extracting files, the About dialogue is displayed indicating the success of the installation.

    Note

After extracting files, the installer modifies the BMC Defender Schedule facility (on the System tab) to start the background process CO-ping.exe program on system startup automatically.

  4. Restart the BMC Defender system processes using the Windows Service Manager or using the Start and Stop Services utility.
  5. Verify with the Windows Task Manager that the CO-ping.exe process is now running on the system.
