E Mail tab

BMC Defender Server includes a reporting facility, that e-mails one or more users various lists of messages on a scheduled basis. The E-Mail Reporting screen is accessed by first clicking on the Reports tab at the top of the screen, and then clicking E-Mail. This facility allows you to select and send specific classes of messages to an e-mail recipient. The top-level E-Mail Report screen is depicted as follows:

The BMC Defender Server administrator can configure up to 100 different reports, that are automatically e-mailed to selected users each day at midnight. These reports are text-based, and provide both summary and detailed information as attachments.

The BMC Defender Server administrator must first specify and configure an SMTP server, by clicking the Configure hyperlink at the bottom of the display, also available using the System > SMTP Server tab. (See later notes in this section on how to configure SMTP server parameters.)

E-Mail report types

The Reports > E-Mail facility can generate and distribute various types of different reports, selectable using the E-Mail Attachment Type drop-down menu when the user clicks the AddNew option.

  • Raw message list—This type of report, when selected, allows you to specify a thread and match expression. When the report is generated, the list of matching messages (over the selected time) range is e-mailed to a recipient as an attachment. This is useful for sending arbitrary lists of messages to an end-user.
  • Audit HTML report—This type of report, when selected, allows you to select one of the audit reports configured under the Reports > Audit tab. Selecting this option reveals another drop-down menu that permits you to select the specified Audit report. The last audit report generated by the system is e-mailed.
  • PDF report—This type of report, when selected, allows you to access one of the PDF reports configured under the Reports >PDF tab. Selecting this option reveals another drop-down menu that permits you to select the specified PDF report. The last PDF report (for the selected report type) that was generated by the system is e-mailed.
  • Custom report—This type of report executes a custom batch file (configured by the operator) to launch a report of an arbitrary type. This type of report generally requires assistance by program support.

Note

Once a report type is selected, it cannot be modified without deleting and re-adding the report.

By default, the attachment to the e-mail is not compressed. Other formatters might also be configured, selectable by the E-Mail Formatter drop-down item to compress the attachment (or perform other processing.)

Scheduling

Normally, e-mail reports are generated by the CO-maint.exe program, that executes at midnight. E-Mailing of reports is always performed after first generating all the Audit and PDF reports, so that you receive the latest report information in the morning.

If the E-Mail report is generated manually (using the Generate option) the last Audit and PDF report generated by the system is e-mailed. Generating one of the Audit or PDF reports is not send e-mail automatically; e-mail is sent ONLY on the execution of the E-Mail screen described herein.
