Alert threshold hints
You can use the alert threshold hints function to view statistics for the catalog associated with an alert for any given time interval. You can accept these settings as a baseline when configuring alert parameters and modify them if required during the course of BMC Defender Server operation.
The alert threshold hints are automatically calculated and displayed on the catalog statistics tabs with a visual representation of the selected catalog's message rate. You can select any period and interval (second, minute, hour, or day) for which data is available to generate the statistics. Use the graph and statistics generated as hints for setting an Alert Threshold. These statistics also power the auto-Learn function, which automatically adjusts the counter alert thresholds.
To see alert threshold hints for the required counter alert, navigate to Alerts > Counters > Edit, and click View Counter Threshold Hints.
Alert threshold hints (before SPE2204)
These alert values are automatically calculated for you through the Threshold Hints screen, accessed by a hyperlink on the Add New or Modify Alerts screen. This screen provides recommended settings for an alert, given a specific time interval. In most situations, you can accept this as a baseline and then make adjustments if needed during the course of BMC Defender Server operation.
The alert threshold hints screen displays thresholds for recommended severities. (In general, the severity of an alert is something that is very user specific, and it cannot be easily guessed programmatically.) The thresholds increase based upon the severity, where critical events are assumed to occur much less frequently than info and warning events. This is a good assumption since you necessarily are attempting to reduce the criticality of messages as part of the normal operation management of the enterprise; hence critical events in fact occurs less frequently.
The Threshold Hints are available on the Alert Edit screen and can also be viewed for any catalog of messages by clicking the View Catalog Statistics hyperlink towards the bottom of these screens.
