ODBC interface

BMC Defender can export report data to a database using ODBC. This furnishes a simple way for third-party reporting tools to access BMC Defender data and provides a mechanism.

Before the audit data can be exported, the operator must first configure the ODBC Data Source Name (DSN) in the Windows Control Panel for the machine (using the 32-bit ODBC configuration program) and then configure the ODBC data source in the Reports > ODBC tab. Help on this procedure is available in a variety of locations, including on the Reports > ODBC > Edit screen.

Once the ODBC data source is configured, the name of the data source appears on the Advanced screen of the audit report. The operator selects the name of the database, and can also modify the report table name. No other information is required. When the report is run, all report data is loaded into the specified table, and the table columns are the names appearing in the reports.

Note

The entire report data is updated (not just the data associated with any particular viewer).

Any existing data is replaced. The data is visible through the Reports > ODBC screen and is available to third-party report generators of any type.

Note

The Reports > Perimeter > Advanced screen, in addition to permitting perimeter metrics to be loaded into a database, can also be configured to load raw perimeter data into the database.

This might be useful for extensive forensics and processing of voluminous amounts of firewall data. The operator configures this special database update capability on the Advanced screen of the Reports > Perimeter tab.
