Installation requirements for BMC Defender Server

BMC Defender Server is specifically designed for fast and easy installation. The system places all files in the BMC Defender installation directory, located by default at C:\Program Files\BMC Software\BMC Defender\.

The BMC Defender Framework system requires the following specific requirements:

Item

Requirements

Operating system

You can install the operating system on Microsoft Windows 2008 through 2016 systems. BMC Defender can also be installed on earlier operating systems (such as Windows 2003 server).

BMC Defender does not require Java, or .NET to be installed on the platform.

The server can run in a virtual machine, but you should consult with BMC Support first.

Disk space

The BMC Defender Server software has a small footprint of less than 100 Mbytes, but the actual disk space might vary depending on the applications installed (or that might later be installed) as part of the framework. A 500 GB high performance disk is common for many production systems. For high volume sites, 1 TB disk space (or even more) might be required.

CPU requirements

BMC Defender Server makes variable use of CPU. The CPU usage of the program might range from 20% to much higher, depending on the message load. BMC Defender Server runs on a quad-core system, but for high volume systems, an eight-core (or more) CPU is recommended. BMC Defender can run on either 32-bit or 64-bit machines.

Memory requirements

BMC Defender Server can run in as little as 8 GB of memory, but BMC recommends 32 GB of main memory for a production system, especially under high message loading.

TCP connectivity

The system is a web server and web-based application, and it requires TCP connectivity. For best results, the host platform should have a permanent IP address and DNS services.

TCP service ports

The system requires control of a single TCP service port, normally port 80, but possibly any other port you select during the installation process. The installation utility attempts to auto-detect a free service port. Port blocking and virus protection programs (in particular McAfee Virus Scan) might interfere with this. (See the notes later in this topic.)

UDP service ports

The system requires a single UDP service port: port 514. It is used for listening to syslog messages. Optionally, port 162 is used for listening to SNMP Trap messages (if the SNMP Trap receiver adapter is installed). These two service ports should be free at the time of installation or the program does not operate properly.

In the absence of any other requirements, BMC Defender recommends a Windows 2016, 2012, or 2008 Server with 800 GB of disk space, quad-core CPU, 32 GB of main memory, and a high-performance network interface controller (NIC). A static IP address for the BMC Defender Server platform is required for all production implementations.

Notes

  • As part of your platform preparation, BMC recommends that you permanently exclude the BMC Defender Server folders (by default the path is C:\Program Files\BMC Software\BMC Defender\, but possibly some other location on your system) from any antivirus on access scanning. This type of antivirus scanning can seriously degrade the performance of the BMC Defender Server system since the BMC Defender system relies on fast disk access when storing and updating log data. Check your antivirus software for more details, and see additional notes.
  • Permanently disable or uninstall data sync applications such as Microsoft OneDrive from the BMC Defender Server platform. Otherwise, it can interfere with performance and introduce security risks. Consult with BMC Support for more information.
