Performing database maintenance tasks

For the most efficient operation, make sure your database contains only up-to-date and essential information. You should populate and back up your database regularly, summarize data for long-term analyses, and delete detail that you no longer need.

Automator is the gateway to the database maintenance tasks known as events. You can access Automator in these ways:

  • On Windows, do the following:
From the Windows Start menu, select Programs > BMC AMI Capacity Management > Automator.
  • On Windows and all other platforms, you can also choose the following:
From Visualizer, select Database > Automator.

The order of events on the Automator menu reflects the order in which BMC Software recommends performing them. You can perform all Automator events interactively or incorporate them in a script to be scheduled to run during off peak hours as background tasks.

Run the database maintenance events interactively the first few times, so you can monitor the process and evaluate its effect on your database. Once you confirm that the tasks are operating as you want, you can combine them in a script (see Automating-routine-tasks-with-scripts) which you can schedule to run unattended (Methods-for-running-events-and-scripts).

Note

We recommend not to open Automator through Visualizer when there is an Automator script already running.
