Configuring data source names for Microsoft SQL Server
Use the following procedure to configure data source names for Microsoft SQL servers.
- Choose Start > Settings > Control Panel.
- Double-click Administrative Tools.
The Administrative Tools dialog box is displayed. - Double-click Data Sources (ODBC).
The ODBC Data Source Administrator dialog box is displayed. - Click Add to display a list of installed ODBC drivers.
- Select SQL Server and click Finish
The Create a New Data Source to SQL Server wizard is displayed. - Enter the following:
- A Name for the data source that you want to use
- A meaningful Description that clarifies the use of this data source
- Select a SQL Server from the Server drop down list. If the name is not on the list, please check with your DBA for a server name.
- Do one of the following:
- If you want to use an SQL Server trusted connection configured on the Server side to connect to the database, click Finish and Test Data Source to test the connection.
The following figures show what happens if you click Test Data Source and the trusted connection is not set up. - If the trusted connection was not configured on the Server side or you want SQL authentication to login, click Next.
- If you want to use an SQL Server trusted connection configured on the Server side to connect to the database, click Finish and Test Data Source to test the connection.
- Choose either Windows NT authentication login or SQL Server authentication login if the server was configured with both connection methods.
- If selecting SQL Server authentication and Connect to SQL Server to obtain default settings for additional configuration options, the Login ID and Password are enabled.
Enter user ID and password. If you don't know the ID and password, check with your DBA. - Click Client Configuration to open the Add Network Library Configuration window to verify the TCP/IP connection.
- Click OK to return to the following page in Create a New Data Source to SQL Server wizard. If the database needs to be connected, it is not the default database.
Select Change the default database to: and select the database to which you want to connect from the list. Leave the default ANSI settings as they are. - Click Next.
- Accept the default settings and click Finish.
- In the ODBC Microsoft SQL Server Setup dialog box, click Test Data Source.
The SQL Server ODBC Data Source Test dialog box is displayed. - Click OK until you exit the wizard.
