Accessing the sample Microsoft Access databases


Before you can graph Visualizer data, you must populate data into a Visualizer database. (For instructions, see Performing-database-maintenance-tasks.)

BMC ships the following sample Microsoft Access databases with Visualizer so you can view the available graphs as soon as you install the product.

  • Distributed Systems (bdsdemo.mdb)
  • MVS (mvsdemo.mdb)
  • VM (vmdemo.mdb)
  • AS/400 (as4demo.mdb)

To open a sample Microsoft Access database

  1. Launch Visualizer.
  2. Select Database > Select.
    The Data Source Selection: ODBC dialog box is displayed.
  3. Click DSN to open the Select Data Source dialog box.
  4. Make the following selections:
    1. Click the Machine Data Source tab.
    2. Click New to open the Create New Data Source dialog box.
  5. Perform the following steps as they appear in sequence: 
    1. Select System Data Source (applies to this machine only). 
    2. Click Next.
    3. Select Microsoft Access Driver (*.mdb).

      Note

      Visit BMC Website and read the current ODBC Support statement which contains the latest versions of compatible ODBC driver information. For information on how to access this information see Accessing-BMC-Software-on-the-Web.

    4. Click Finish.

      Note

       This provides the flexibility to access the DSN from other accounts running on this machine, including from a Task Scheduler task running as the system account. 

  6. In the ODBC Microsoft Access Setup dialog box:
    1. Type MVSDemo (or the name of one of the other sample databases) in the Data Source Name field.
    2. (Optional) Enter a description of the MVSDemo sample database. 
    3. Click Select .
  7. In the Select Database dialog box:
    1. Select MVSDemo.mdb from the following path:
      C:\ Program Files \BMC Software \visualizer \DB
    2. Click OK.
  8. In the ODBC Microsoft Access Setup dialog box, click OK.
  9. In the Select Data Source dialog box:
    1. Select MVSDemo.
    2. Click OK.
  10. In the Login dialog box:
    1. (Optional) Specify Login Name and Password. 
    2. Click OK.
  11. In the Data Source Selection: ODBC dialog box, MVS Meas/Smry appears in the Available Platforms list. Double-click MVS Meas/Smry to expand it to MVS Measurements and MVS Summary.
  12. Double-click on one of the two data sources.
  13. Select Graphics from the Visualizer Main menu to view the available MVS graphs.
