Distributing the Agent and extensions via the launch page

This topic describes how to obtain the bootstrap package for your system that contains the agent package and other common packages, which is the preferred way for distributing the files. Alternately, you can manually transfer the files, as described in Distributing-the-TMTM-Extensible-Agent-and-extensions-manually.

For the i5/OS platform, you must choose the bootstrap download file format in .zip format, and unpack the file on the i5/os machine using the Java jar command "jar xvf pkg-i5os-bootstrap.zip".

If you do not have access to Java on your i5/OS machine, you should use FTP to transfer the qpagent.savf from the AGENT_DIST directory on the server machine, as described in the i5/OS sections under Installing-agents-and-extensions-in-the-Flat-Directory-layout.

Choosing how the Agent installation and services communicate

To obtain the relevant bootstrap package for your system

  1. Open Internet Explorer.
  2. Enter http://hostname:15007 in the URL field, where:
    • hostname is the hostname or IP address of the computer running the Application Service
    • 15007 is the default port used by the Application Service
  3. From the displayed page, click Download Agents.
    A list of all the supported agent platforms is displayed, with links to download the package in zip, tar, and tgz formats.
  4. Choose the Agent Configuration.
  5. (Optional) Enter a description for the agent.
    This description can be used with policies to have certain actions performed when this agent first connects to the services.

  6. Locate the required agent platform and file compression type to download.

    1. If the agent machine is the same as the one you launched your browser from then select the link to download the file.
    2. If the agent machine does not have browser support you can use a command line tool such as wget or curl to retrieve the bootstrap package using the URL obtained from the browser page by hovering over the link.
    3. If a command line tool is unavailable you can download the package to the machine from which you launched your browser and then transfer it to the agent machine. For example, using FTP in a binary mode.

      Typically the bootstrap package contains the following folders:
    • agent - contains the basic files needed for the qpea agent
    • agentpref - contains the agentPref utility files
    • bmmtm_agent - contains the files for the TMTM Configuration Agent which are used for BTM model and package deployment
    • jre - contains the Java Runtime Environment for the agent
    • qpmon - contains the qpmon and qpcfg extension files

      Note that the contents of the bootstrap package vary by agent platform. To determine the expected content, review http://hostname:15007/agentdist/platforms.jsp.

      In addition, on z/OS, the bootstrap package is installed in the USS environment. Some files need to be transferred, as described in subsequent sections.
  7. Repeat the above procedure for the Unzip utility if needed to open the compressed file.
  8. If it does not exist, create a directory for the agent installation resides (agent installation directory). The directory must be a directory solely for use by TrueSight Middleware and Transaction Monitor.
  9. Transfer the bootstrap package to the agent installation directory, if it is not already present (see step 6 above).
  10. Using a tool appropriate for the format of downloaded archive (e.g., unzip, tar, gunzip), unpack the bootstrap package in the agent installation directory.
