SPACVOLA—add volume during allocation (used with Allocation)
The SPACVOLA function adds a volume to a data set when z/OS is unable to find sufficient space on the current volume.
z/OS allocates up to 16 extents on a volume for non-VSAM data sets and up to 123 extents for VSAM data sets. If this limit is exceeded and additional space is needed the expansion of the data set fails.
When z/OS has allocated maximum space on a volume, SPACVOLA adds a volume from the current pool or an alternate pool that is specified in SMPOOLxx. SPACVOLA can prevent out-of-space conditions for data sets that are allocated on a single volume, and SPACVOLA provides flexibility in secondary volume allocations for data sets that are allocated on multiple volumes.
