Alarm definitions

Alarm definitions consist of the following values:

  • threshold, persistence, and filter criteria
  • view, product, and contexts for which the criteria are established
  • message IDs and message text
  • monitoring frequency and time periods
  • hyperlinks to views, extended help, and data passed to MainView AutoOPERATOR

Threshold conditions are derived from thresholds in the MainView for z/OS product. Alarm definitions are stored in a zFS file that is allocated by the CAS. This file is read by MainView Alarm Manager at CAS initialization and whenever administrative functions are performed.

Threshold conditions are defined as one of five priority levels:

  • informational
  • warning
  • minor
  • major
  • critical

MainView for z/OS ships distributed alarm definitions in BBACTDEF member BBDTDA. The ALRMDIST view, as shown in following Figure, lists the distributed alarm definitions, which can be installed by either typing ADD on the COMMAND line or using an ADD line command.

Note

ALRMDIST writes the alarm definition directly to the MainView for UNIX System Services file system. Your PAS must have an OMVS segment and must be authorized to write to the directory specified for alarm definitions in the CAS.
