Overview


The following figure each component of MainView for Linux — Servers and illustrates the communication between the components.

MainView for Linux — Servers uses several components to collect and display information on the monitored Linux images.

RTServer

The RTServer provides the capability of passing messages between MainView for Linux — Servers Product Address Space (PAS) and the data servers of the Linux systems and z/VM systems that it is monitoring.

Linux data server

A data server resides on each monitored Linux image. The data server sends data that is provided by the data collector to the MainView for Linux — Servers PAS through the RTServer.

Linux data collector

A BMC Performance Assurance Data Collector (bgscollect) resides on each monitored Linux image. Each data collector gathers data from the monitored Linux image and provides the data to the data server, which sends the data to the MainView for Linux — Servers PAS through the RTServer. The ESAMON from Velocity Software can also be used to collect Linux data, in which case, the bgscollect program will not be needed.

z/VM data server

A data server resides on the z/VM system where your Linux systems are running.The z/VM data server obtains data from a real-time performance monitor or the BMC z/VM Monitor Reader and sends the data to the MainView for Linux — Servers PAS through the RTServer.

z/VM data collector

To view z/VM performance data, MainView for Linux — Servers requires one of the following real-time performance monitors or the BMC z/VM Monitor Reader to be installed on the z/VM system where your Linux systems are running:

  • BMC z/VM Monitor Reader
  • ESAMON and zMON by Velocity Software
  • Performance Toolkit by IBM

The BMC z/VM Monitor Reader product is packaged with this version of MainView for Linux — Servers. This z/VM monitor reader runs its own virtual machine (VMMAVMSR).

MainView for Linux — Servers PAS

MainView for Linux — Servers PAS runs as a z/OS subsystem. MainView for Linux — Servers PAS stores heartbeat data that is provided by monitored Linux systems and z/VM systems. For more information about heartbeat data, see Heartbeat data. The PAS requests data from the monitored Linux and z/VM systems as views are displayed.
