Using the CHISTORY dialog

Use the following procedure to display and work with the CHISTORY dialog.

  • Typically, you enter one or more masks, one or more qualifiers, and specify the search range and number of records to return. If you do not specify selection criteria, default values for the time frame and the number of records returned are applied to all systems in the current context, and the results (if any) are displayed in the CHISTH view.
  • You can always use the CHISTORY dialog to retrieve records for the default time frame without first specifying additional parameters. The default time frame is from the previous midnight to the moment Enter is pressed. The records are listed from the values specified in END Date/Time to the Start Date/Time fields and displayed from newest to oldest if the Read From default is END

Note

The amount of private storage (above the line) that the CHISTH and CHIST views use is the function of the number of targets in the current context, the time frames specified, and the transaction rate. For best results, ensure that the regions in the context contain only the targets in which you are interested. A context of ALL is not recommended.

  1. Display the CHISTORY dialog by typing  CHISTORY on any COMMAND line. When CHISTORY is displayed, default values are set for several parameters.

  2. (optional) Enter one or more search masks.

You can specify up to three values for each of the searchable mask types. Records are returned as long as matches are found for these values.

If multiple values are specified for a mask type, MainView for CICS searches for records that match any of the values (value1 OR value2 OR value3). If values are also specified for other mask types, only transactions that match at least one value for each specified mask type are returned.

For example, if you enter PAY1 and APAY in the Transaction Mask field, and PAYROLL in the Workload Mask field, the application will search for PAY1 transactions that are also in the PAYROLL workload, or APAY transactions that are in the PAYROLL workload. Matching records are displayed in the CHISTH view.

    See How-selection-criteria-is-applied for more information.

See Selection-masks for more information about selection masks.

  3. (optional) Specify how case is handled for transaction and terminal masks.

Transaction and terminal mask values can be either case sensitive or case insensitive. Use the Uppercase Names field to specify how case should be handled.

    • A value of Yes or blank means that both the mask and the tested value will be converted to uppercase prior to comparison.
    • A value of No means that the mask and the tested value will be compared exactly as entered.

    See Uppercase-Names-field for more information.

  4. (optional ) Enter one or more qualifiers.

Specify one or more qualifiers, such as: Response Range, CPU Time Range. If values are entered for any of these fields, records are returned only if they satisfy all values.

For example, if you enter 4444 as the Low value for File Call Range, and 222 for the Low value of Response Range, only records that satisfy both values will be returned.

    See How-selection-criteria-is-applied for more information.

    See Specifying-ranges for more information.

  5. (optional ) Specify Read From and the time frame.

The value in the Read From field specifies if the END or START date and time is used to start reading CMRDETL records to be displayed. The record is listed in the order it is read. Only records that fall within the specified time frame are selected.

By default, transactions that ran from midnight of the current day up to the moment the Enter is pressed are selected. You can define a time frame by entering values into any of the Start Date/Time fields, or the End Date/Time fields.

The default for Read From is END and the newest to the oldest records are displayed..

    See Read-From-and-search-time-frame.

  6. After completing the selection criteria, press Enter.

If no errors are encountered, MainView for CICS searches each system in the context that was active during the specified time frame. Records that satisfy the criteria (if any) are displayed in the CHISTH view.

    See CHISTH-view.

For information about error handling, see Error-handling.

  7. (optional) Refine selection criteria.

After the CHISTH view is displayed, you can use the PF3 key to return to the CHISTORY dialog to modify your criteria.

When you return to the CHISTORY dialog, the previously entered criteria is available for modification. The CHISTORY dialog retains your criteria as long as the MainView window is active.
