Using Events

In MainView Middleware Monitor, you can use the Events component to determine the following:

  • All the events that occurred on an object. This serves as an audit log of events for the object.
  • View the list of events during a specific time-period.
  • View the list of events that occurred on an object for a specific time-period.

The following sections describe how you can utilize the features available in the Events component:

To create an event query for an object
  1. Click Events Query.
A list of query parameters is displayed.
  2. Assign values to these parameters as per your requirement. The following table describes the query parameters:

    Query parameters

    Description

    Object

Select the main object for which you want to view the events. Perform the following steps:

    1. Click Select Object. The Object Selection window is displayed.
    2. Select a type of object from the Object Type list as per your requirement.
    3. In Object Name, Enter a Perl Compatible Regular Expressions (PCRE) format for your search parameter. For example: Use .* for all object names.
      1. The Include only monitored objects option is enabled by default.
Select or unselect the option to include only monitored objects in the Objects tree (Physical or Logical).

        Important

The events that have occurred is always maintained, whether the object that triggered the event is currently monitored or not.

      2. Click Search.
The Objects tree is displayed in an expanded format with only those objects that match your search criteria.
    4. Click Physical or Logical to expand the list of objects within them.
    5. Click an object to select it.
You can also expand the main object to select a child object within it. Select a main object or a child object to view their events.

      Important

An object is not available for selection if you cannot select it when you click on it.

    6. Click Save to confirm the object selection.

    Suppressed

Yes: Select to search and display only suppressed actions.

No: Select to search and display only unsuppressed actions.

    For more information, see Suppressing-events.

    Success

Yes: Select to search and display only successful actions.

No: Select to search and display only failed actions.

    Recurse

Yes: Select to search and display the child objects of the main Object you have selected.

No: Select if you do not want to view the child objects.

For example: You have selected a queue manager as the main object and set the Recurse query to Yes. After applying the queries, the Events Journal table displays queues, channels, namelists, and more.

    Cause

If a set of rules is validated, they trigger a set of events. These recorded events are called Actions
Select to search and display data from the Action section of a rule or template.

Clear Actions are the recorded events that are cleared as the condition that caused the events is no longer valid. Typically, the Clear Actions section sends a notice that the condition has cleared and it no longer needs to be monitored. The Action section is excluded.
Select to search and display data from the Clear Actions section of a rule or template.

    Result code

Enter a value you want to display as the result of the action node.
Typical results are return codes such as 0 or 1.

    Important

This result is different than whether an action failed or succeeded.

    Max Results

Enter a value that denotes the maximum number of results to return from the database.

    Important

    • Assign a lower value to Max Results if there are a lot of actions that have been executed. This helps in expediting the query check process.
    • You can also select a shorter time duration or a more specific filter. A message is displayed and the result set is truncated if there are more records than Max Results specifies.

    Rule

Enter the name of a Rule to filter the displayed data as per the applied Rule.

    Important

    • You can use substrings (portions of rule names).
    • If you have used Templates for configuring the events, the Rule name is based on the Template Name. The Rule name is defined by a unique identifier, -# at the end of the name .

    For more information, see What-are-events-and-how-to-define-them.

    Action

Enter the name of an action to filter the displayed data as per the specific rule.

    Important

    You can use substrings.

For more information, see What are actions and how to define them.

    Trigger

Enter the name of a trigger to filter the displayed data as per the specific trigger.

    Important

    You can use substrings.

    For more information, see What-are-triggers-and-how-to-define-them.

  3. Click Save to save the event query for future use.
  4. Click Apply Filters to create an event query for a specific object.

To select a date and time period
  1. Click the Time-period button. The default value is Last 24 hours.
The following pop-up dialog is displayed:
    time-period window.png

  2. Select a date from the displayed calendar and a time duration as per your requirement.
Additionally, clicktime and calendar arrow.pngto display a clock. You can use this clock to select a specific time as per your requirement to view the events that occurred during this period for a specified date.
  3. You can also use the Custom option to specify a date and time as per your requirement.
To view the events
  1. Click Reload Events.
The Events Journal page displays the events that occurred on the selected object as per the events query and time-period options you have configured.

    Important

If you choose Last 15 minutes, Last 60 minutes, Last 4 hours, and Last 24 hours as the Time-period, Reload Events provides you the following options:

    • Off: Select to keep the Reload Events feature inactive.
    • 1m, 5m, and 10m: Select one to update the list of events for an object every 1 minute, 5 minutes, and 10 minutes respectively.
  2. Click Visible columns and select the columns you want to view on the Events Journal page.
If each column has more than one values available, a filter option is displayed that you can use to find specific information that exists for the displayed events.
  3. Clickevents arrow.pngbeside an event to view the details of an event instance.
The details of an event are displayed in the Inputs and Action Flow tabs. For more information, see Input-tab-fields and Action-flow-tab-fields.

    Important

Click on the Type Path or Instance path in the table to copy the internal value of that object.  This can then be used for running command line utilities that require a Type or Instance path.

Tip: For faster searching, add an asterisk to the end of your partial query. Example: cert*
