Creating and using a translate file with the CLI

The translate file (an editable text file) changes the names of objects to coordinate with the system you are importing to. For example, you could change the system name from the system you built the environment on to the production system name.

During an export, all topic paths associated with the exported objects are written to the translate file.

Export changes to the same translate file are cumulative. If you export to a translate file, change the names and then export a new, overlapping set of objects, the new objects are added to the file without overwriting your changes.

To create a translate file

  1. To create a translate file, specify the -t flag in your export command. The name you specify here is used to identify the translate file.
  2. Append the extension .txt to the translate file name so that it can be opened easily in a text editor.

    Verify that when the export command runs, all the topic paths associated with the exported objects are written to the file.

To use a translate file

  1. Open the translatefile in a text editor. The following shows a sample translate file.

  2. Change the right side of the equation as needed.

    The left side must remain unchanged.

    The following sample shows how you would change the translate file if you needed to import to a system named PARIS instead of MADRID.

    When this file is imported, the object names are changed to the required system name, PARIS.
