Configuring SNMP

You can use the Console Automation Server to configure your Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) connections. The main SNMP configuration page contains controls for enabling the SNMP trap listener and setting the port. The SNMP Connections page displays the currently defined SNMP configurations and trap ports.

This topic describes how to enable the SNMP Trap listener and create new queries, upload MIB files, and configure Trap formatters by filling out the respective wizards.

To enable the SNMP Trap listener

On the MainView Console Automation Configuration page, click the SNMP tab.
In the section SNMP Configuration, select the Enable SNMP Trap Listener checkbox.
In the SNMP Trap Port box, enter the SNMP Trap port number. The default SNMP trap port is 162. You can enter multiple ports separated by a comma.
Click Save.

If the server is running, the following message appears. Click Yes to activate the changes.

Note

On port number 1023 or less, Linux permits only processes that are running as root to listen for network traffic. If you have configured your system to run under a different user account, you must change the SNMP trap port number to a value greater than 1023.

You can create new queries, upload MIB files, and configure Trap formatters by filling out the respective wizards:

SNMP query wizard

You can invoke a new query by using the SNMP query wizard. After adding the device address into the wizard, you can use the query template to specify the query manually. You can also select the IODs for the query. The device will then receive an SNMP GET request to provide the list of supported OIDs.

You can also specify default colors and conditions for messages.

Copying SNMP queries

You can create a new SNMP query from an existing one by selecting the existing query and clicking the Copy icon. The resulting dialog box requests a name for the new query. After you provide the name, the Console Automation Server inserts the new query into the database and links the new OIDs to the query.

Deleting SNMP queries

You can delete a query by clicking the Delete icon next to the SNMP query. A dialog box requesting confirmation requests confirmation. When prompted, confirm that you want to complete the deletion. The Console Automation Server deletes the SNMP query record and its associated OIDs.

Editing SNMP queries

You can edit existing queries by clicking on the Edit icon. The Create New SNMP query page lets you change the parameters of the query. Click Save to update the existing query.

Uploading MIB files

You can upload and delete MIB files by clicking the MIB Files button. The initial dialog box lists MIB files that are already in the system. Click the Upload MIB Files icon to access the dialog box that requests the location of the MIB file. Clicking Upload completes the upload.

SNMP trap formatters

You can define, edit, and delete Trap Formatters by clicking the Trap Formatters button. Click the New Format icon to add a new Trap Formatter to your Console Automation Server. Click Edit to edit existing formatters.
