Generation Data Group (GDG)

A method that is used to allow a group of related files to be created that can be referenced individually or as a group. The data sets that are cataloged by using the base, such as PAYROLL, are the GDG data sets that are cataloged under that base. For example, if the base is PAYROLL, when a data set is cataloged with this base, a G0001V00 value is appended (PAYROLL.G0001V00). The way that the GDG base is defined determines how many files will increment.
