End-of-file (EOF) process

When sequential data sets are used, MVS sets an end-of-file (EOF) indication in the file when the writer finishes writing to the file.

When the reader reads the file, MVS passes the EOF indication to the reader after the reader has read all of the records from the file to indicate that there are no more records to read.

A similar process can be performed by the Pipe Handler when pipes are used.
