Adding elements to a policy

Use the procedures in this topic to add CPCIDs or subpolicies to a policy, or to add an LPAR or group to a policy or subpolicy:

To add a CPCID

Use this procedure to add a CPCID to a policy.

Warning

Note

If you want to run iCap across multiple CPCs, you must ensure that PTF BQY1794 is applied. Also ensure that CON=value is specified in the JCL for all master and agent PASs that are running on LPARs that you want iCap to manage. For more information, see Specifying the context for master and agent PASs.

  1. Type ADDC on the COMMAND line and press ENTER, or complete one of the following actions:
    • In windows mode, type ADD in the CMD column next to an existing CPCID.
    • In MainView Explorer, right-click an existing CPCID and select Line action > Add to a policy.
  2. Enter values for the CPCID and Description parameters.
The CPCMSUs parameter defaults to 0, which enables iCap to use all of the available MSUs on the CPC.

    Success

    Tip

    • You can discard any changes and start over by entering REFRESH on the COMMAND line.
    • To save your changes, type SAVE on the COMMAND line.
If you exit the policy without saving, your changes will be lost.
  3. Press F3 to save the CPCID (or in MainView Explorer, click OK).

To add a subpolicy

Use this procedure to add a subpolicy to a policy.

  1. Type ADDS on the COMMAND line and press ENTER, or complete one of the following actions:
    • In windows mode, type ADD in the CMD column next to an existing subpolicy.
    • In MainView Explorer, right-click an existing subpolicy and select Line action > Add to a policy.
  2. Enter values for Subpolicy NameDescription, and MSU Limit.
The remaining fields reflect the values that you specified in the main policy. You can change these fields as required. For a list of policy and subpolicy parameters and their descriptions, see Policy-level and subpolicy-level parameters.

    Warning

    Note

    • The MSU limit for a subpolicy (and the sum of subpolicy MSU limits) cannot exceed the main policy's MSU limit.
    • Subpolicies do not support capacity groups. However, you can include group members in a subpolicy and manage them as individual LPARs. For more information, see Policy-guidelines.
    • BMC recommends that you specify the same value for Manage Cost for the main policy and the subpolicies.
    • Deleting a subpolicy from a policy also deletes the LPARs and groups that the subpolicy contains. However, the CPCID is not deleted.
  3. On NLPARGRP, specify at least two LPARs for the subpolicy to manage.
Complete one of the following actions:

    • In windows mode, type ADD in the CMD column next to an LPAR.
    • In MainView Explorer, right-click an LPAR and select Line action >Add to a policy.

For a list of LPAR and group parameters and their descriptions, see LPAR and group level parameters.

    Success

    Tip

    • The NLPARGRP view lists all of the available z/OS LPARs and capacity groups that are running on your CASPlex. NLPARGRP does not list LPARs or groups that are already contained in the policy or subpolicies.
    • You can discard any changes and start over by entering REFRESH on the COMMAND line.
    • To save your changes, type SAVE on the COMMAND line.
If you exit the policy without saving, your changes will be lost.
  4. When finished adding LPARs, complete one of the following actions:
    • In windows mode, press F3 to save the subpolicy. The POLDSPLY view is displayed.
    • In MainView Explorer, take the following steps:
      1. On NLPARGRP, type SAVE on the COMMAND line and press ENTER.
        The POLICIES view is displayed.
      2. On the POLICIES view, right-click the policy name and select Line action > Update a policy.
         The POLDSPLY view is displayed.

To add an LPAR or group

Use this procedure to add an LPAR or group to a policy or a subpolicy.

  1. Type ADDL on the COMMAND line and press ENTER, or complete one of the following actions:

    • In windows mode, type ADD in the CMD column next to an existing LPAR or group name.
    • In MainView Explorer, right-click an existing LPAR or group name and select Line action > Add to a policy.

The NLPARGRP view lists all of the available z/OS LPARs and capacity groups that are running on your CASPlex. NLPARGRP does not list LPARs or groups that are already contained in the policy or subpolicies.

  2. Specify at least two LPARs or groups for the policy to manage:

    • Type ADD in the CMD column next to an LPAR or group name.
    • In MainView Explorer, right-click the LPAR or group name and select Line action > Add to a policy.
    Success

    Tip

    • You can discard any changes and start over by entering REFRESH on the COMMAND line.
    • To save your changes, type SAVE on the COMMAND line.
If you exit the policy without saving, your changes will be lost.
  3. Enter values for the following parameters:

    Parameter

    Action

    Priority

Enter the relative priority of an LPAR or capacity group. Possible values are 1 through 5. The default is 3.

    Warning

    Note

Before you run iCap in manage mode, BMC strongly recommends that you specify different values for each LPAR and group in the policy.

    Proportion

Enter the proportion of the MSU limit to which the LPAR or group is entitled.

    Success

    Tip

The simplest way to calculate proportion is as a percentage of 100. For example, if you are managing two LPARs (LPARAAA and LPARBBB), you might specify a proportion of 30 for LPARAAA and 70 for LPARBBB.

    Subpolicy name

Enter the name of the subpolicy to which you want to add the LPAR. Leaving this field blank adds the LPAR only to the main policy.

    Warning

    Notes

    • The subpolicy must already exist.
    • Capacity groups are not supported in subpolicies. You can add individual LPARs, or group members to be managed as individual LPARs. If you are adding group members, all of the group members must be included in the subpolicy and main policy. For more information, see Policy guidelines.

For the other parameters, you can accept the default values; you can change them later, if needed. For detailed descriptions, see LPAR and group level parameters.

    Warning

    Note

The main policy must contain at least two LPARs, groups, or group members, and each subpolicy must contain at least two LPARs or group members.
