Trial Utility

You can invoke the Trial utility by submitting a JCL job in a batch MVS environment.

This utility is a TSO command processor that you use in the batch TSO environment.

The Trial utility helps you determine the following information:

  • how much media space and money you can save by using the DATA ACCELERATOR Compression to compress your VSAM and non-VSAM data sets
  • which compression technique yields the highest compression percentage for your data sets

The Trial utility performs the following processes:

  • accesses a specified data set or group of related data sets
  • performs specified compression actions
  • formats compression statistics into a report

The Trial utility does not modify any of the data sets it analyzes. It deletes any compressed data generated by trial analysis immediately after it obtains the compression statistics from the Extended Compression Architecture (XCA) compression engines.
