Dataset Activity Report


The Dataset Activity Report is produced by using the DATASET Analyzer control statement.

The data for this report is obtained from SMF type 42-6 records. The report consists of six sections. All sections of the report contain the same information; however, each section presents the information in a different order or level of detail. Also, several options let you further alter the content of each report section:

  • An I/O count threshold limit lets you set a threshold as to what data sets can appear on a report. DSN or volume I/O counts that fall below the threshold do not appear on the report.
  • You can limit reports to certain jobs, DSNs, and volumes, and various combinations of each.

The Dataset Activity Report consists of the following individual sections:

  • Dataset Activity Detail by DSN section

    This section of the Dataset Activity Report is ordered by DSN, volume, and job name. It includes full activity details with subtotals by job name and volume.

    A sample of the Dataset Activity Detail by DSN section is shown in following figure. A list and description of the fields in the entire Dataset Activity Report can be found in Dataset Activity Report field descriptions.

  • Dataset Activity Summary by DSN section

    This section of the Dataset Activity Report summarizes the information in the Dataset Activity Detail by DSN section, providing a listing of the most active data sets in this order:

    • descending order by total I/O count
    • descending order by I/O intensity
    • ascending order by cache hit percentage

    The size of the summary report is determined by the SUMLIMIT parameter of the DATASET Analyzer control statement; the default value provides three single-page summary reports, each with up to 40 lines of data.

  • Dataset Activity Detail by Job Name section

    This section of the Dataset Activity Report is ordered by job name and is broken out by DSN and volume. It includes full activity details with subtotals by volume and DSN.

  • Dataset Activity Summary by Job Name section

    This section of the Dataset Activity Report summarizes the information in the Dataset Activity Detail by Job Name section, providing a listing of the most active jobs in this order:

    • descending order by total I/O count
    • descending order by I/O intensity
    • ascending order by cache hit percentage
