Working with view modes: Browse, Edit, and Force
Eligible views have mode indicators and actions. For example, BMC AMI Ops administrative views can operate in either BROWSE (the default mode) or EDIT mode. You can change modes through view actions. Some monitoring views provide IBM System–defined operational modes such as FORCE ON and FORCE OFF.
Browse and Edit modes
In some administration views, the BMC product resource enables you to view or edit product configuration.
The view opens in Browse mode, with the mode status next to the view title, as displayed in the following image:
Example of Browse mode and view actions
In Browse mode, you can perform some view-only actions. If you try to perform edit actions in this mode, an error message indicates that the Edit mode is not active and the command is ignored.
Menu items and precise wording vary according to product configuration, but if editing is permitted, a menu item on the page enables the mode. In the preceding example, you can enable the Edit mode by selecting View actions > Edit - Obtain the Edit Lock from the three-dot action menu next to the view title. The Edit mode is now active, as indicated by the mode status next to the page title, such as in the following example:
Example of Edit mode indication
You can now perform edit actions in this mode.
Force mode
The Force mode is an IBM system–defined operation for specific monitoring views that can change entities on the mainframe. IBM determines where you can perform these actions and verifies the permissions.
When you open a view where Force commands are available, the mode status is not active and the status is not displayed by the view title. This serves as a kind of protection against unintentional changes.
Example of view actions for Force mode
Menu items and precise wording vary according to product configuration, but if Force mode is permitted, a menu item on the page enables the mode. In the preceding example, to activate the Force mode, select View actions > Mode Force from the three-dot action menu next to the view title. The Force mode is now active, as indicated by the mode status next to the page title, such as in the following example:
Example of activated Force mode
To deactivate the Force mode in this example, select View actions > Mode Norm from the action menu next to the view title. The Force mode is deactivated and the status is displayed:
