Best practices for PDSE requirements

Warning

Version 4.0.00 of the Installation System requires that the BBLINK and BMCLINK data sets be PDSE. The CAS and PAS must use a PDSE BBLINK or BMCLINK as their runtime library and the IBM IMS control region must still run with a PDS runtime library for the product to successfully be initialized.

If you are currently sharing your executable BBLINK runtime data set with CAS, PAS, or IMS control regions, we recommend that you perform one of the following procedures to allocate a new PDSE or PDS module in the CAS, PAS, or IMS control region:

Option 1

This procedure requires JCL changes to your CAS and PAS tasks only:

  1. Allocate a new APF-authorized PDSE BBLINK executable runtime library for your CAS and PAS tasks. For allocation attributes, see jobs $105SMPE and $205RTEC.
  2. Copy the contents of the SMP/E Target and runtime BBLINK (or BMCLINK) data set to the PDSE that you allocated in step 1.
  3. Update the CAS and PAS JCL to point to the new PDSE that you created in steps 1 and 2.
  4. Back up your IMS control region executable BBLINK runtime data set.
  5. Delete and redefine the executable BBLINK runtime library used in the IMS control region.
  6. Use BBSAMP JCL member ICOPY9 to copy the required modules from your SMP/E Target BBLINK or BBLINKP data sets to the executable BBLINK runtime library that you used in the IMS Control region in step 5.
  7. Restart the CAS, PAS, and IMS control regions.

Option 2

This procedure requires JCL changes to your IMS control region tasks only:

  1. Allocate a new APF-authorized PDS BBLINK executable runtime library for your IMS control region. For allocation attributes, see jobs $105SMPE and $205RTEC.
  2. Use BBSAMP JCL member ICOPY9 to copy the required modules from your SMP/E Target BBLINK or BBLINKP data sets to the executable BBLINK runtime library that you allocated in step 1.
  3. Update the IMS control region JCL to point to the new PDS data set you created in steps 1 and 2.
  4. Back up your shared BBLINK executable data set.
  5. Delete the executable BBLINK runtime data set used for CAS and PAS.
  6. Define the new PDSE executable BBLINK runtime library used for CAS and PAS. For allocation attributes, see jobs $105SMPE and $205RTEC.
  7. Copy BBLINK or BMCLINK contents to the executable BBLINK runtime library that you redefined as a PDSE in step 6.
  8. Restart the CAS, PAS, and IMS control regions.
