Filtering out selected enqueue majors

(BMC.AMIOPS.SPE2207)

You can identify the major name of resources that generate excessive ENF notifications and exclude these majors from being monitored.

Identifying resource majors that generate excessive ENF notification

Use one of the methods to identify the major names:

  • CMFEQE42 and CMFEQE43 messages

These messages alert you when the sampler's CPOOL cells are exhausted. The messages identify the top five majors that are exhausting the cells.

  • ENQENFZ view

This view helps you to identify the major name with the highest number of ENF notifications.  The view lists the majors in descending number of ENF notifications that were processed during the interval. You can also see the average size of the internal CPOOL cells that are holding ENF notifications.

    Important

The counts do not include the ENF notifications that were queued and caused Storage-Threshold-Exceeded condition. These notifications are discarded without being processed.

You can access the view in the following ways:

    • Hyperlink from the ENF Notifications column on the ENQCONT view. By default, the ENF Notifications and Avg ENF Size columns are excluded from the view.
    • Type the view name on the command line.
    • Hyperlink from the VIEWS view.

    Tip

To see information about the resource minors that caused the highest number of ENF notifications, hyperlink on a major name.

Excluding resource majors from monitoring

Use the following procedure to exclude resource majors from monitoring:

  1. Update PARMLIB member BBDTNQxx:
    1. Specify the resource major that you want to exclude on an EXCMAJOR statement.
    2. Specify one or both of the following values:
      • SMF77 FILTERED to filter the major from the SMF-77 records written by the ENQUEUE sampler
      • HISTDATA FILTERED to filter the major from history data

        Important

The excluded resources do not show up on the following views:

        • Enqueue contention: ENQCONT, ENQSTAT, ...
        • Jobs delayed due to resources contention and jobs holding the resources: JDENQ(Z), JUENQ(Z)
        Example
        SMF77 FILTERED
        HISTDATA FILTERED
        EXCMAJOR SYSDSN
  2. Add the NQ=xx parameter to the PAS PROC and restart the PAS.

    Important

You can also control the collection of enqueue contention data with the ENQUEUE control statement. Any parameters specified on the ENQUEUE control statement override the values specified in BBDTNQxx.

Tip: For faster searching, add an asterisk to the end of your partial query. Example: cert*
