Managing and using models

It is an intensive amount of work to create complex definition attributes for an object especially when you need to define many similar objects that will run on many systems within a sysplex. When you define a model, it can be associated with one or more objects. The associated objects inherit attributes from the model. In addition to this, when you change an attribute in a model, the change is reflected automatically in all objects that specify that model.

To view which objects use a specific model object and would be impacted by a change to the model object:

  • From the TOBJ view, enter WHERE TOBJMDLF=model-name (here model-name is the name of the model object) and refresh the view. The view will only show those objects which use the specified model.

Using models can greatly reduce the time needed to define multiple similar objects. For example, you can create an STM model object for transient objects and specify common attributes in the model object (such as the transient attribute or start command).  Then for all transient STM objects, by specifying the model object these attributes are inherited and do not have to be specified in each transient STM object.
