Difference between STOP, LOCK, and BLOCK

The LOCK, BLOCK, and STOP commands can all stop an object that is in ACTIVE status, but they have different purposes:

  • LOCK is intended for keeping an object down (inactive) until the next IPL.
  • BLOCK is intended for keeping an object down indefinitely. A BLOCKED object is not started at IPL.
  • STOP is the preferred command for stopping an object or set that is ACTIVE and has many options for controlling the stop.

Important

You can use LOCK and BLOCK on objects and sets in a Definition Base other than the one that is in use (active). This is useful when you are preparing a new Definition Base for a new TOMPLEX or managing changes to an existing Definition Base.
