Adding entities to a policy

Use the procedures in this topic to add CPC IDs, subpolicies, LPARs, and groups to a policy.

Before you begin

These procedures are executed on the POLDSPLY view. To access POLDSPLY, complete one of the following actions from the POLICIES view:

  • In windows mode, type UPD in the CMD column next to a policy name and press ENTER.
  • In

    MainView Explorer

, right-click a policy name and select Line action > Update a policy.

To add a CPCID

Use this procedure to add a CPCID to a policy.

Important

If you want to run iCap across multiple CPCs, ensure that CON=context  is specified in the JCL for all master and agent PASs that are running on LPARs that you want iCap to manage. For more information, see Specifying-the-context-for-master-and-agent-PASs.

  1. On POLDSPLY, type ADDC on the command line and press ENTER, or complete one of the following actions:
    • In windows mode, type ADD in the CMD column next to an existing CPCID and press ENTER.
    • In

      MainView Explorer

, right-click an existing CPCID and select Line action > Add to a policy.

  2. Enter values for the following parameters

    Parameter

    Default value

    Description

    CPCID

    No default

ID of the CPC that you want to add to the policy

    Description

    No default

    Description of the CPC

    CPCMSUs

    0

Maximum number of MSUs that the CPC can use

If you specify 0 (the default),iCap can use all of the available MSUs on the CPC.

    Important

This parameter is restricted to policies that manage multiple CPCs.

    Tip

You can discard any changes and start over by entering REFRESH on the COMMAND line.

  3. To return to POLDSPLY, press F3 (or in MainView Explorer, click OK).
  4. To save your changes, type SAVE on the command line.

    The POLICIES view is displayed.

    Warning

If you exit the policy without saving, your changes will be lost.

To add a subpolicy

Use this procedure to add a subpolicy to a policy.

  1. On POLDSPLY, type ADDS on the command line and press ENTER, or complete one of the following actions:
    • In windows mode, type ADD in the CMD column next to an existing subpolicy and press ENTER.

      MainView Explorer

, right-click an existing subpolicy and select Line action >  Add to a policy.

  2. Enter values for Subpolicy NameDescription, and MSU Limit.
The remaining fields reflect the values that you specified in the main policy. You can change these fields as required. For a list of policy and subpolicy parameters and their descriptions, see Policy-level and subpolicy-level parameters.

    Important

    • The MSU limit for a subpolicy (and the sum of subpolicy MSU limits) cannot exceed the main policy's MSU limit.
    • Subpolicies do not support capacity groups. However, you can include group members in a subpolicy and manage them as individual LPARs. For more information, see Policy-guidelines.
    • (PTF BQY2794 applied) Subpolicies do not support unmanaged LPARs.
    • BMC recommends that you specify the same value for Manage Cost for the main policy and the subpolicies.
    • Deleting a subpolicy from a policy also deletes the LPARs and groups that the subpolicy contains. However, the CPCID is not deleted.
  3. On NLPARGRP, specify at least two LPARs for the subpolicy to manage:

    • In windows mode, type ADD in the CMD column next to an LPAR and press ENTER.
    • In

      MainView Explorer

, right-click an LPAR and select Line action > Add to a policy.

For a list of LPAR and group parameters and their descriptions, see LPAR and group level parameters .

    Important

    • NLPARGRP lists all of the available z/OS LPARs and capacity groups that are running on your CASPlex. That is, all of the LPARs and groups from all of the CPCs in your CASPLEX.
    • You can add LPARs and groups from any CPCID that is defined in the policy. If you try to add an LPAR or group from a CPCID that is not defined in the policy, an error message alerts you that the CPC ID is missing.
    • NLPARGRP does not list LPARs or groups that are already contained in the policy or subpolicies.
  4. When you have finished adding LPARs, save the changes to the policy:

    • In windows mode, take the following steps:
      1. Press F3 to return to POLDSPLY.
      2. Type SAVE on the command line.
    • In MainView Explorer , on NLPARGRP, type SAVE on the command  line and press ENTER .
      The POLICIES view is displayed.
    Warning

If you exit the policy without saving, your changes will be lost.

To add a managed LPAR or group

    Subpolicy name

(Optional) Enter the name of the subpolicy to which you want to add the LPAR.

Leaving this field blank adds the LPAR only to the main policy.

    Important

    • The subpolicy must already exist.
    • Capacity groups are not supported in subpolicies. You can add individual LPARs, or group members to be managed as individual LPARs. If you are adding group members, all of the group members must be included in the subpolicy and main policy. For more information, see Policy guidelines.

For the other parameters, you can accept the default values; you can change them later, if needed. For detailed descriptions, see LPAR and group level parameters.

    Important

The main policy must contain at least two managed LPARs, groups, or group members, and each subpolicy must contain at least two managed LPARs, or group members.
