TFP Planning tool

You can use the TFP Planning tool to create a TFP plan and generate a TFP Evaluation Summary Report to estimate the effect of specified changes on the total MSU consumption and total cost of production solutions over 12 months.

Using the TFP Planning tool you can create a plan that uses information about individual jobs and STCs. BMC AMI Cost Management uses the Universal Information Exchange (UIE) component to extract this information from SMF Record type 30 and store it in the performance database component of the Capacity Database Web Services (CDB).

Use cases

The following use cases describe how to achieve value with the TFP Planning tool. For more information about the operations described in these use cases, see Using the TFP Plan Summary page > Operations section.

Use case

Solution

You want to remove applications that you no longer require and evaluate the impact of your pricing.

Select Delete Activity

The number of customers using your service is expected to grow by 10 percent. This means there is going to be a 10 percent growth in business applications A, B, and C.

Use the Scale Activity By operation to increase the activity by 10 percent and estimate the effect of this operation on the overall cost.

Define a Job/STC subset corresponding to these applications. The TFP Planning tool uses statistical projections to estimate the total increase of MSU consumption in the remaining future month of a 12-month TFP configuration cycle and the corresponding increase in cost if the total consumption exceeds the current IBM contract MSU entitlement.

You know that at the end of the next quarter, a particular application will not receive much activity.

Use the Scale Activity By operation to reduce the activity by 50 percent and estimate the effect of this operation on the overall cost.

The TFP Planning tool estimates the effect on the total MSU consumption of the DevTest Solution, but it does not estimate the cost changes of the Dev/Test Solution because it is not based on total MSU consumption.

You have developed a new application in DevTest Solution and your customer wants you to move it to a production solution.

Use the Move Activity to Solution operation.

You can use the TFP Configuration tool to define solutions that consist of LPARs on multiple CPCs. The TFP Planning tool does not report MSU consumption by individual LPARs. However, you do need to specify a CPC where you want to move your jobs.

You have developed a new application in DevTest Solution and you want to move it to a production solution and evaluate the effect of growth in activity.

Perform the following operations on a TFP plan simultaneously:

  • Use the Scale Activity By operation to increase the activity by 100 percent and estimate the effect of this operation on the overall cost.
  • Use the Move Activity to Solution operation to move the DevTest Solution to a product solution that is predefined in the TFP plan.

Before you begin

To use the TFP Planning tool, make sure you have fulfilled the following requirements:

  • Cost Management version 24.1.00 or later must be installed on your system.
  • TFP Configuration Manager must have at least one TFP configuration defined.
  • You must have at least three months of monthly reporting data available to get proper estimates.

Using the TFP Planning tab

The following sections describe how you can utilize the features available on the TFP Planning tab:

Creating a TFP plan
  1. Navigate to the TFP Planning tab> New Plan tab.
  2. Configure the plan in the following fields:

    Field

    Description

What would you like to name your plan? (Required)

Enter a name for the TFP plan of up to 25 characters.

Which TFP Configuration do you want to use? (Required

From the displayed list, select a TFP configuration under Available Configurations on which you want to perform the growth projection based on historical data.
The list displays only those TFP configurations that have not completed the 12-month cycle.

You cannot select TFP configurations displayed under Unavailable Configurations because they consist of historical data that has completed the 12-month cycle and they are no longer valid for future projections.

Which History Month do you want to use? (Required)

Click and select the year and month that you want to use as the source of the historical data to apply changes to the TFP configuration.

Which DSN do you want to use? (Required)

From the list select a data source name (DSN) under Available DSNs. The DSNs used in Cost Management are ODBC data sources defined as System DSNs in the CDB Automator catalog.

The DSNs are displayed in accordance with the available CPCs for the History Month that you have selected. Make sure that you select a DSN containing all the CPCs that you want to impact with your changes. For more information, see Which TFP Configuration do you want to use?.

The DSNs that are no longer available in the CDB Automator catalog are displayed under Unavailable DSNs.

    Important

    • You must select a DSN that contains all of the CPCs that you want to impact with your changes.  If the CPCs are in different DSNs then you may not be able to perform all of the available actions.
    • If there is only one available DSN, it is automatically selected.

Would you like to provide a plan description?

You can enter additional information that describes the purpose of creating this plan.

    2. From all the other filters, select one or more of the available filter values.
    3. In the Job Name Pattern filter, specify one or more job name patterns using wildcards.
For example, a Payroll job may start with P. You can enter P* to add the job and any other job names beginning with P to the filtered job list.
To remove a job name pattern, click image-2023-12-14_19-27-52.png.

      Important

      • If you do not select any filter values from a filter list, all filter values are selected by default.
      • If you want to group the filter values into a single aggregated value, click Aggregate Selections.
  2. Click Preview.
The Job/STC Name list is displayed based on your selections in the filter bar. A maximum of 100 names is displayed. If more than 100 names are returned, the last item is *others*.
