Viewing an alert summary

You can use Smart Dashboards to view an alert summary, which helps you detect anomalies in your system.

The BMC AMI Capacity Reporting nightly process creates the alert summary on the Smart Dashboards. After all the data is populated into the BMC performance database, the nightly process runs at the scheduled time to update the alert statuses in the Smart Dashboards.

For more information, see Updating-the-CDB-Automator-script-to-run-the-daily-processes.

Nightly process and alerts

The nightly process reevaluates all workflows based on the Dynamic Date Timespan field.

Important

Only workflow report views with dynamic time spans are reevaluated by the nightly process.

  • Each time the nightly process runs, it retrieves new data from the database and makes this new data available to both the workflow report view and the dashboard.
  • To reevaluate all alert rules specified in the category and metrics charts, apply them to the reevaluated result and generate alerts (if any).
  • By default, all workflows associated with dashboards are reevaluated and all other workflows are skipped.

    Important

Using the -w command line flag includes all workflows regardless of whether they are associated with a dashboard.

Generating alerts

To generate alerts, the nightly process reevaluates the alert rules attached to workflows with the latest data. The statistical boundaries that you specify in the Banding option in the Filter Action > Advanced Filter Options defines the alerts boundaries. Each alert rule works for one category and one metric. The alerts generated by the nightly process are displayed in the Dashboard Alert Summary dialog box on the Smart Dashboards.

For more information on banding, see Using-the-Banding-and-the-Min-Max-options.
