Working with chart options

In the Workflow Builder, you can customize the charts for better analysis of the data.

Working with chart options 25.1_png2.png

The following table describes the options that you can use to customize your charts:

#

Option

Description

1

Interval marker

When you move the interval marker by clicking on the chart, the navigation view below the chart updates the day, date, and time of the data.

To move the interval marker, move your cursor in the chart and click. You can also use the left and right arrows on the navigation view to move one interval at a time. Wherever you place your cursor in the chart, a tooltip displays the values for that particular time.

For more information on tooltip values, see Data-Grouping section on Changing-the-chart-appearance.

2

Date Timespan

Displays the date time span.

If you selected a Fixed Date Timespan, the date range that you entered in the date picker is displayed. If you selected a Dynamic Date Timespan, the period that you selected is displayed.

To change the date time span, click Date Timespan and change the time span on the Modify Report View panel.

3

Custom legend

Each entry in the custom legend shows the category and the metric. The legend is in category:metric format. For example, Special Processors-1: zIIP Management Time (%).

You can scroll the custom legend to see the data returned for each category-metric entry.

To expand or collapse an entity, either click the folder name, arrow, or folder icon.

If you have selected advanced metrics, the custom legend displays Advanced next to the category-metric entry.

Important

If you have selected a category multiple times, the custom legend displays all the references to that category as follows:

The button color indicates the following information, depending on whether you are using a Category/Metric level entry or Object level entry (Instance ID):

On a Category/Metric level Entry

On an Object (Instance ID)

A blue button indicates that at least one object in that entry is using the option.

A blue button indicates that the object is using the option.

A white button indicates that no object in that entry is using the option.

A white button indicates that the object is not using the option.

Top N (Ranked by Software MSUs),

Instance ID

Sort objects in the chart legend by using the following options:

  • Sort by RankOrganize objects by ranking metric, displaying the top or bottom order. You can configure this in the Advanced Filter Options dialog box for each category. Rank metrics only allow sorting by themselves or another metric within the same category.
  • Object Label Column Sorting Options: Click the hyperlink to select one of the following options:
    • By Top/Bottom N: Sort objects based on their rank.
    • By Instance ID: Sort objects by their unique identifiers.

The Instance ID column displays the objects that were found in the data based on your selections in the filter options and supports ascending or descending sorting.

5

Visible

Hide or display a particular object on the chart.

If you select Visible for a metric, the Workflow Builder and Smart Dashboards selects the Visible option for all objects and the chart hides or displays the objects accordingly.

6

Highlight

Highlight a particular object on the chart.

For line and area charts, the line becomes thicker. For column charts, the column borders become black.

If you select Highlight for a metric, the Workflow Builder and Smart Dashboards selects the Highlight option for all objects and the chart highlights the objects accordingly.

7

Ghost

Ghost a particular object on the chart. Ghosted objects become more transparent, allowing you to see other objects on the chart more easily.

If you select Ghost for a metric, the Workflow Builder and Smart Dashboards selects the Ghost option for all objects and the chart ghosts the objects accordingly.

8

Metric Description

See the metric description. A side panel opens and the description is displayed.

If you have selected an advanced metric, the Metric Description displays the Advanced badge next to it.

The description comes from the BMC AMI Capacity Database Web Services data dictionary. It cannot be modified.

9

Alert Rule

Create and attach an alert rule to a metric.

The Attach Alert Rule pane is displayed. The alert rules that you attach to a workflow are applied to the latest data during the nightly process to generate alerts (if any). Alerts are triggered based on the statistical banding or constant threshold that you have selected.

For more information, see Managing-alerts-for-anomaly-detection.

10

More Actions

Change the series color, value markers, marker style, label markers, and the axis grid. You can also use it for data grouping.

The More Actions panel displays the category, metric, and series at the top.

You can use More Actions for all objects in a category or for a single object in that category. For more information, see Changing-the-chart-appearance.

11

Banding and Min/Max

Hide or display the upper and lower statistical boundaries for a given object. The banding option is displayed when you select the Measured option in the Data-Granularity field. The banding option can be applied to all chart types except the stacked charts.

Additionally, when Banding or Min/Max is enabled for an object, the upper and lower or minimum and maximum values for that object at the selected interval are displayed in the legend.

For more information, see Using-the-Banding-and-the-Min-Max-options.

Important

Banding and Min/Max can be turned on for only one object at a time.

When you select a Measured as option in the Data-Granularity field, the Banding option is replaced by Min/Max option.

12

Value column

Every object has a corresponding value in the Value column.

The values shown in this column change when you move the interval marker on the chart. For more than one object under a given metric, you can scroll down to see the total value. The Value column also supports sorting the objects by value.

Additional information about the chart axis

Each category or metric value appears on its axis in the chart. Modifying the axis-related options affects only the category : metric that you select. You might need to modify multiple category or metric options to achieve the desired results.

The Workflow Builder combines the metrics with the same unit value (as determined by the BMC AMI Capacity Database Web Services Data dictionary) into a single axis on the chart. These metrics still appear as separate category or metric entries in the custom legend. The stacking feature stacks the charts as follows:

  • Per metric by object: (Default) Creates one stack of objects per metric for each interval. For example, totaling LPAR utilization or MIPS.
  • Per object by metric: Creates one stack of metrics per object for each interval (metrics must be from the same category instance and have the same unit value).  For example, totally different response time metrics.
