Working with shift profiles

This section describes the Manage Shift Profiles option in the Administration Tools. The Manage Shift Profiles option divides the week into shifts. The shifts are used as input to BMC AMI Capacity Reporting analytic processing. The data that the Manage Shift Profiles tool collects is analyzed in relation to the business activity at your site. To describe your business activity, you need to divide the hours of a typical week into shifts that represent different levels of activity.

Important

You need to be a BMC AMI Capacity Reporting product administrator to access the Manage Shift Profiles option.

The following example show how the shifts might work for different types of activity:

  • For a retail store, business activity on weekends is probably different from weekday activity, and daytime activity is different from nighttime activity. In this case, a business week might contain four shifts:
    • Hours 1000-2000 on weekdays
    • Hours 0000-1000 and 2000-2400 on weekdays
    • Hours 1100-2200 on weekends
    • Hours 0000-1100 and 2200-2400 on weekends

Important

  • A week contains 168 hours (7x24=168).
  • Each hour of each day can belong to only one shift.
  • The shifts do not need to be equal in size or contiguous. However, all shifts together must cover the entire 168-hour week.

In the following example, the week has been divided into four distinct shifts:

  • Weekdays (Monday through Friday) are different from weekends (Saturday and Sunday).
  • Each 8-hour shift on a given day is different from every other shift on that day.

You can add Sysplex groups to create Shifts for certain SMFIDs or Sysplexes.
Fox example, production batch processing might take place on certain SMFIDs or Sysplexes during the overnight hours from 12 A.M. to 5 A.M. And, the online processing might take place on certain SMFIDs during the day from 8 A.M. to 6 P.M. Using Sysplex groups, you can set up shifts for only those Sysplex group identifiers that are specified for the Sysplex group. When you add a Sysplex group, the Shifts grid is cleared so you can enter the shifts for that Sysplex group.

Profile Name

Name of the shift profile

If you are creating a DSN-specific profile, a suggested profile name is given which you can change.

Select Template / DSN: tmp

If you are using a default shift profile, the Select Template option is available to you. The Select Template list includes the product-provided shift profile templates and the shift profiles that you created and saved.

If you are using DSN generated shift profile, the DSN: tmp option is available. If you are creating a DSN-specific profile, a suggested profile name is provided, you can change the profile name.

SYSPLEX

If you have access to z/VM data, this list will also include the z/VM groups.

You can select a Sysplex from the suggested list or create a customized one using the Add option.

In the Add SYSPLEX window:

  1. Enter a Sysplex name.
  2. Enter a SMFID, and click Add.
    The SMFID is added and displayed in the SMFIDs field.
  3. Click Accept to save the changes.

Important

If you select the default group (that is, selecting a BMC product-provided shift profile ), you can't specify SMFIDs.

You can delete a SMFID by clicking X next to it.

Important

If you have selected a default shift profile, all unallocated SMFIDs in your data are automatically included in it.

After making the changes, click Accept.
