Working with the Nightly Process

The Nightly Process automatically evaluates all existing workflows and Smart Dashboards.

When the Nightly Process processes workflows, it preserves the explicit selections, which you specified in the filter bar, and uses them in all views and categories. If your selection does not uniquely identify an object, then the Nightly Process selects the Top n or Bottom n number of objects based on your selections in the Advanced Options pane. For example, when a filter field on the filter bar shows ALL as the selection, the query for a specific category might return multiple objects.

The Nightly Process operates on the following assumptions:

  • You want to identify the objects with Top n highest values or Bottom n lowest values of the selected metric
  • In the subsequent categories and views you want to obtain additional information about the same objects or related objects

For example, if the current view shows the Service Classes with the highest Performance Index, in the descendant view you might want to see Queuing metrics for the LPARs in which these Service Classes run.

Assisting in root cause analysis

The Nightly Process automatically propagates selections of Top or Bottom objects for all filters that did not uniquely identify an object to the subsequent categories in the current view, and to all descendants of the current view. 

For example, if in the current View Category the top two selected Service Classes are SYSA/BATHIGH and SYSB/BATPRD (SMFID/Service Class), and the descendant view is configured to show the top 10 Jobs, the Nightly Process selects these Jobs using SMFID Filters SYSA and SYSB, and Service Class Filters BATHIGH and BATPRD.

Important

These filter selections are dynamic and are not saved in the Workflows. For example, the Nightly Process selection of the top two Service Classes might change to SYSC/BATHIGH and SYSD/BATPRD when it runs the next time. The descendant view showing the top 10 Jobs changes accordingly.
