Working with chart options

There are many options in the Workflow Builder to customize charts for a better understanding of the data.

The following table describes the available chart options that appear below the charts:

Option

Description

Example

Interval marker on the chart

When you move the interval marker on the chart, the navigation view below the chart will update. The navigation view displays the day, date, and time of the data that you want to investigate.

You can also click on the chart with the mouse to move the interval marker. The arrow moves one hour at a time.

Data Timespan

The area below the navigation view displays the data time span that you have selected. If you select Fixed Data Timespan while adding the report view, the view displays the date range that you entered in the date picker. If you select Dynamic Data Timespan, the view displays the period that you have selected.

To change the data time span click Data Timespan and make changes in the time span in the Modify Report View panel.

Custom legend pane

The custom legend pane is the last pane below the chart. You can scroll down and up the custom legend pane to look at the data generated for each category-metric-object. The data in the custom legend pane is divided into sections. The first part of the section name is the category and the second part is the metric that is selected. In the example image, Service Class Activity is the category and Workload CPU Utilization is the metric.

To expand the section, click chart_legend_expansion_arrow.png. The expanded pane displays the selected objects for that category-metric in the Instance ID column.

Instance ID column

The Instance ID column displays the objects that you specifically selected or were found in the data based on your selections in the filter options.

To make the chart more readable the section pane has few other options:

Note

  • A blue button indicates the option is on. In case of a metric, one or more objects below the metric have this option on.
  • A white button indicates the option is off including all objects below the metric.

Visible

To show or hide a particular object on the chart, click the Visible button.

Note

If you select Visible for a metric, the Workflow Builder selects the Visible option for all objects and the chart shows or hides the objects accordingly.

Highlight

To highlight a particular object data, click the Highlight button. For line or area charts, the line becomes thicker. For the column charts, the column borders become black.

Note

If you select Highlight for a metric, the Workflow Builder selects the Highlight option for all objects and the chart highlights the objects accordingly.

Ghost

To dim out a particular object data, click the Ghost button. Ghosted objects become more transparent, allowing you to see other objects on the chart clearly.

Note

If you select Ghost for a metric, the Workflow Builder selects the Ghost option for all objects and the chart ghosts the objects accordingly.

Banding

The Banding option shows or hides the upper and lower statistical boundaries for a given object.

For more information, see Banding-option.

Note

Banding can be turned on for only one object at a time.

Value column

Every object has a corresponding value in the Value column. The value shown here changes when you move the interval marker on the chart. If there is more than one object under a given metric, you can scroll down to the value where a "total" value is displayed for the metric.

Metric Description

To see the details of a metric, click Metric Description. A side panel opens and all the information about the selected metric is displayed in the panel. The information is generated from the BMC CDB data dictionary. You cannot modify the metric description.

Using More Actions option

Using the More Actions option, you can work with series color, value markers, marker style, label markers, and make changes in the axis grid in the metric that you select.

To work with more actions for all objects, click the More Actions option corresponding to a category/metric. The More Actions panel is displayed on the right side.

To work with more actions for a particular object, click the More Actions option. The More Actions panel is displayed on the right side.

The following table describes the tasks that you can perform in the More Actions panel. Click Apply after each action.

Purpose

Action

Turn on or off the axis grid in the chart

Click Show axis grid button. By default the Show axis grid check box is selected.

Change the color of the object

Select the Series Color check box. Using the color picker, select a color to change the color of the object.

The bullet next to the object changes to the new color. The line, area, or column representing that object also changes to the new color.

Show value markers at the metric level will show markers for all objects under that metric.

Click the Show value markers list and select the relevant option.

Note

Enabling value markers for large amounts of data can impact chart rendering performance.

Change the color of the grid

Click on Axis Color box. From the color picker, select a color to change the color of the grid.

Show value markers make every data point on the chart appear as bullet points.

Click Show value markers. The Show value markers option makes every data point on the chart to appear as bullet points. It has three options: On, Off, and Auto. The default is Off.

The Auto option of the marker lets the chart decide when to show the markers. If there are too many data points to show the markers clearly, the chart will disable markers until you zoom in to a point where they can be displayed.

To see the data points of a particular section of a chart, click and drag the cursor on that section. The chart zooms in to show the value markers in that section.

You can set the marker styles of the bullet points by using the Marker Style option. To select a marker style, click the Marker Style list, and select from the available options. You can select your marker style as circle, square, diamond, triangle, and triangle-down.

Notes

  • Enabling/disabling this option on the metric level affects the value markers for all the objects under this metric.
  • Enabling/disabling this option at the object level affects the value markers for only the selected object.

Label the data points

Select Show label markers. All data points now display the values associated with them.

Notes

  • Enabling/disabling this option on the metric level affects the data labels for all the objects under this metric.
  • Enabling/disabling this option at the object level affects the data labels for only the selected object.

Change the chart type of a metric

Select the relevant chart type from the Series Type list:

  • Select Area option to generate an area chart.
  • Select Column to generate a column chart.

Stack the charts

From the Stack Series list, select an option to stack all series for a given metric. You can also stack all series for a given metric up to 100 percent. By default, all series for a given metric are unstacked.

Note

You can stack only those objects on a chart that are associated with the same metric because stacking works per category/metric. You cannot stack all series on a chart if they are associated with different metrics.

Set the minimum value of the axis

Select the Use Minimum Value check box and use the arrow to set the value in the Axis Minimum Value field.

Set the maximum value of the axis

Select the Use Maximum Value check box and use the arrow to set the value in Axis Maximum Value field.

Note

Selecting the Use Minimum Value or Use Maximum Value check boxes overrides the charts default minimum and maximum values.  Uncheck the boxes to allow the chart to calculate the minimum and maximum value for the metric axis.

Additional information about chart axis

Each category or metric appears on its axis in the chart. When you modify the axis related options, the modification will only affect the category/metric that you select. It may be necessary to modify multiple category/metric options to get the desired results.

Workflow Builder combines the metrics with same unit value (as determined by the CDB Data Dictionary) into a single axis on the chart. These metrics will still appear as separate category/metric entries in the custom legend. In this case, the stacking feature will still only stack objects in the same category/metric.
