Promote

Promote moves the selected components to the next life cycle level. Two promote actions are available:

  • Promote does the following:
    • Moves the selected components to the next life cycle level
    • If deploy is configured with the Selective Deploy functionality in the ISPW instance, users can select which environments to deploy to. If deploy is configured in the ISPW instance without Selective Deploy, the parts are deployed to all environments.
  • Promote with Options, in addition to the above actions, allows the user to do the following to make modifications to the set that processes the promote:
    • Create a new set or specify an existing unlocked set to process the action for the selected tasks.
    • Optionally choose an existing set for processing the action, during which a list of existing unlocked sets with the same stream, operation, and level will be displayed. A Find button can also be used to add further criteria to search for unlocked sets and select a set.
    • When creating a new set, modify the set attributes such as the description and change type.
    • Select the date and time to process the promote action.
    • Select processing options, such as whether to lock, unlock, or hold the set.
    • If deploy is configured in the ISPW instance, select deploy options, such as the date and time for the deploy implementation and activation.

To promote

  1. Do any of the following:
    • From the ISPW Containers view, right-click the desired assignment or release container and select Promote. This button is disabled if more than one container or release is selected. A warning message appears if the container contains tasks at different levels and/or streams; no components are promoted.
    • From a view that supports tasks (with the exception of the ISPW Set view), right-click one or more tasks and select Promote. A warning message appears if the selected tasks are at different levels and/or streams; no components are promoted.
    • From the life cycle graph, right-click the life cycle level node and select Promote. Promote is available if one task is active at that level.
  2. If the Deploy Environments dialog box appears, select one of the following radio buttons to specify the deploy environments:
    • Do not deploy - No deployment takes place.
    • Deploy to all environments - The set is deployed to all environments listed in the Deploy Environment column.
    • Deploy to specific environments - The check boxes in the Deploy Environment column are enabled. Select the check boxes for the environments in which to deploy the set. To filter the list of environments, in the Find field, enter the first few characters of any column. The table refreshes to show only the environments that match the filter

      Important

This is only applicable if Selective Deploy was configured in the ISPW instance.

  3. Click OK. Processing occurs and when processing has completed, the Promote Failure dialog box appears if there were any failures.

To promote with options

  1. Do any of the following:
    • From the ISPW Containers view, right-click the desired assignment or release container and select Promote with Options. This button is disabled if more than one container or release is selected. A warning message appears if the container contains tasks at different levels and/or streams; no components are promoted.
    • From a view that supports tasks (with the exception of the ISPW Set view)), right-click one or more tasks and select Advanced Operations>Promote with Options. A warning message appears if the selected tasks are at different levels and/or streams; no components are promoted.
    • From the life cycle graph, right-click the life cycle level node and select Promote with Options. Promote is available if one task is active at that level.
The Promote Set Options page of the Promote with Options wizard appears.
  2. Select Create a new set (default) or Specify an existing set.
  3. If you choose Specify an existing set, a set that was previously unlocked with the same stream, operation, and level will be displayed in the list from which you can select the existing set to use for processing. Otherwise, no sets will be listed. The Find button displays the Find Unlocked Set dialog box where you can search for unlocked sets that match the specified criteria. Select a set in the search results and click OK; that set will be populated in the list as the existing set to use for processing in the Promote Set Options page.
  4. Revise the set attributes as necessary based on the field definitions.

    Important

The Application and Release ID fields are read-only.

  5. Optionally, select the Schedule check box then click capture.jpg. Select the start date and time to process the promote action.

    Important

The date and time specified uses the time zone of the ISPW CM server.

  6. Click Next. The Deploy Options page of the Promote with Options wizard appears.

    Important

Clicking Finish instead of Next on this or any wizard page bypasses the remaining wizard pages, processes the set, and, if configured, displays the Deploy Environments page for selecting the environments in which to deploy the set. See below for instructions on using the Deploy Environments page.

  7. Optionally, select the Schedule a deployment check box to set implementation and activation schedules. This is only applicable if deploy environments were configured in the ISPW instance.
    • Click capture.jpg next to Implementation and select the earliest date and time that the deploy implementation process can begin.
    • Click capture.jpg next to Activation and, for defined activation processes, this is the earliest date that they can be dispatched for execution.
  8. Click Next. The Set Processing Options page of the Promote with Options wizard appears.
  9. Select one of the following radio buttons:
    • Process the set (Lock) - Select to process tasks in the set.
    • Leave the set open for changes (Unlock) - Select to not process tasks in the set so that further changes can be made, such as adding tasks.
  10. Optionally, select the Hold the set until it is manually released check box to cause the set to be marked as Held (not to execute when locked) as an initial state.
  11. Click Finish or Next. The following occurs:
    • If the set is unlocked, the set is created and remains open for further changes.
    • If the set is locked and Selective Deploy was not set up in the ISPW instance, processing occurs.
    • If the set is locked and Selective Deploy was set up in the ISPW instance, the Deploy Environments page of the Promote with Options wizard appears. Select one of the following radio buttons to specify the deploy environments, then click Finish.
The table refreshes to show only the environments that match the filter.

Processing occurs and when processing has completed, the Promote Failure dialog box appears if there were any failures.
