Enter z/OS console commands


The Console view can be used to enter z/OS console commands, view the resulting response output, and view the z/OS Console log.

To enter z/OS console commands

  1. Do one of the following:
    • From the JES Explorer view, click jes_open_zos_console.jpg.
    • If the Console view is open, from the open_console.jpg dropdown list, select z/OS Console.
    • If the Console view is not open, from the Window menu, select Show View>Console. Then, from the open_console.jpg dropdown list, select z/OS Console.

      The Console view appears.
  2. Do either of the following:

    • Type the desired command and press Enter.
    • Click history_list.gif. The Issue recent z/OS Console command dialog box appears. Select the desired command and click OK.

The response to the entered command appears in the Console view.

Important

If a mainframe connection was not previously established, the Login dialog box appears, prompting for a connection and log on credentials. The connection used by the Console view can be changed at any time by clicking connect.gif.


Important

If the user has insufficient authority to issue commands or the particular command, a RACF error will appear in the Console view.


Important

Preferences for the Console view can be set from the Window menu by selecting Preferences>Run/Debug>Console.

To have multiple consoles open concurrently

  1. Open a z/OS Console and establish a mainframe connection as described above.
  2. Click pin_console.jpg. This pins the open Console view.
  3. From the open_console.jpg drop-down list, select New Console View. A second Console view appears.
  4. With the second console view active, from the open_console.jpg dropdown list, select z/OS Console.
  5. Click pin_console.jpg. This pins the second Console view.
  6. Establish a mainframe connection for the second Console view as described above.

To open a system log

  1. From the Console view, do one of the following:
    • To open the active system log from the connected host opens in the default editor, click opensystemlog.gif.
    • To choose which system log(s) to open, click showsystemlogs.gif. The Open System Logs dialog box appears. Select one or more and click OK. The logs open in the default editor.
  2. If the Prompt me upon opening the system log check box is selected, the System Log Display Options dialog box appears. Do one of the following to set the number of lines to display when opening the system log:

    • Select Open the entire active system log and then click OK.
    • Select Open the last <number> number of lines of the system log and enter the number of lines to be displayed and then click OK.

To set the number of lines to display when opening the system log

  1. From the Window menu, select Preferences>Compuware>z/OS Console. The z/OS Console page of the Preferences dialog box appears.
  2. Do one of the following:
    • Select Open the entire active system log.
    • Select Open the last <number> number of lines of the system log and enter the number of lines to be displayed.
  3. Select or clear the Prompt me upon opening the system log check box. If the check box is selected, the System Log Display Options dialog box appears whenever opensystemlog.gif is clicked in the Console view, thus allowing the number of lines to display when opening the system log to be set.
  4. Click OK.
