Compile diagnostics preferences

The Compile Diagnostics preference page is used to specify settings for compile diagnostics reporting, which allows users to view diagnostics for current and previous compilations and to locate diagnostic problems in the source or source listing.

To display compiler diagnostic messages, the compile must be processed using the Compuware Shared Services COBOL or PL/I Language Preprocessor, and Compuware Shared Services PTFs must be current. Further, to submit JCL and display compile diagnostics, the JOB statement must include a NOTIFY parameter with the value of the current Topaz Workbench user ID or &SYSUID. The preprocessor step is explained in the Compuware Shared Services User/Reference space.

These preferences do not apply to ISPW.

To specify compile preferences

  1. From the Window menu, select Preferences. The Preference dialog box appears.
  2. From the navigation panel, select Compuware>Compile Diagnostics. The Compile Diagnostics preference page appears.
  3. To enable the Problems view to automatically display the latest compile diagnostics for jobs submitted using the Submit Compile option, select the Automatically display latest compile diagnostics check box. Clear the check box to collect diagnostics but not populate the Problems view; when ready to view the diagnostics, refer to for how to display diagnostics for previously completed compile jobs. The default is enabled.
  4. To set the severity threshold at which diagnostics will be displayed, select one of the following thresholds from the Display diagnostics if the highest severity is at least drop-down list:

    • Informational
    • Warning
    • Error
    • Severe
    • Unrecoverable

Diagnostics for a compile will only be displayed if the highest severity in the compile meets or exceeds the selected threshold. The default is Error.

  5. To select where to link the latest compile diagnostics, from the Automatic display of compile diagnostics box's Link problem markers drop-down list, select Source, Source listing, or Prompt me. The default is Source. Choosing Prompt me prompts the user when Submit Compile is chosen.
  6. To select where to link previous compile diagnostics, from the Display of previous compile diagnostics box's Link problem markers drop-down list, select Source, Source listing, or Prompt me. The default is Source listing. Choosing Prompt me prompts the user when Show Compile Diagnostics is chosen.
  7. To automatically open the Problems view when reporting compile diagnostics, select the Show the Problems view when reporting compile diagnostics check box. Clear the check box to remain in the current view., in which case diagnostics can be viewed by manually opening the Problems view.
  8. To display the compile requirements message box each time a compile is submitted, select the Show compile requirements message after submitting a compile check box. To prevent the message box from appearing, clear the check box. The message box can also be disabled by selecting the Don't show me this again check box within the message box.
  9. To display a message when there is no source code related to a compile diagnostic, select the Show warning when source code is not found check box. Regardless of whether the check box is selected or cleared, the compile diagnostics will still be linked to the source listing.
  10. Click Apply to save the settings and remain on the Preferences dialog box, or click OK to save the settings and exit the dialog box. Clicking Restore Defaults restores the default compile preferences settings.
