Tasks View

The ISPW Tasks view shows the components in a selected container. A task is another name for a specific version of a component and its related objects.

A task may have associated documentation, DBRMs, compile and link parms, output listings, change impact data, and so on. The task is the visible object on this list, while these other components are associated behind the scenes.

For an assignment or release container, the ISPW Tasks view is the user interface for every ISPW operation, from checkout through promote to production. It shows the components to be added, deleted, or changed for a particular unit of work. The ISPW Tasks view is a shortcut to various tools, so it makes it quick and easy to invoke the right tool at the right time, without ever even knowing file names.

Note: Toolbar buttons and context menu options are disabled for actions that do not apply to the selected task/container combination.

Every development and support function a person needs to do can be done from this ISPW Tasks view interface. Users may edit components, compare versions of components, generate executables, run scripts, debug and trace code, view batch job output, write documentation, and promote components through test environments, all from the ISPW Tasks view.

ISPW gives a logical view of all of the components in one list so it's easy to track and manage work, regardless of where it is on the system or who is working on which component.

ISPW Tasks view entries are sorted by component type, then name.

Columns, actions, and fields

See to column definitions, action definitions, and field definitions for information about the columns, actions, and fields in this view.

Note: If the task is opened for a set, certain actions, like generate, will be disabled for the set.

To understand the ISPW Tasks view status messages

The following table describes the possible values for the ISPW Tasks view's statuses.

Message

Explanation

Check Versions

Appears in the Status field as a reminder of a potential conflict. There is another version in the life cycle.

History

The task has been overlaid by another version at PROD. The source and its parts are backed up in the warehouse.

Superseded Backup

The task has been overlaid by another version below the PROD level. The source has been backed up and is available in the warehouse.

Superseded Gone

The task has been overlaid by another version. The source had been backed up in the warehouse but, since other subsequent overlays have occurred, this version is too old version-wise and has been deleted from the warehouse.

In process: Edit (sync); UserID (ASMITH)

The user indicated is editing this task. "sync" indicates synchronous (online).

In process: Generate (async); UserID (ASMITH)

The user indicated is generating this task from TSO at a DEV level (without a SET). "async" indicates asynchronous (in the background or batch).

In set process: Generate waiting

A generate has been requested through a set and the set is waiting on the start time.

In set process: Generate executing

The task is waiting on the set to process it but, because of the order of processing, it has not been submitted yet.

In set process: Generate (sync) executing

The user indicated is generating this task through a set. "sync" indicates that the set is still processing/preparing the generate JCL, which has not been submitted yet.

In set process: Generate (async) executing

The user indicated is generating this task through a set. "async" indicates that the set has created and submitted the generate JCL and is now sleeping, waiting for the submitted generate job to finish.

In set process: WT00002031

The set ID WT00002031 is in process. This is usually seen when someone is watching a set process. This stage of the processing is usually after the execution of the action is done and the set is being updated with the result. The other time this is seen is when multiple tasks are being processed in a set and this particular task has successfully been processed and is waiting for the other tasks to be processed. Therefore, the set is still processing other tasks and is still holding this task.

In set process: Generate failed

This task was part of a set that failed. View the compile diagnostics to determine how to rectify the problem

In set process: Generate (failed) failed

This task, part of a set, failed its generation.

In set process: Implement failed

Set process failed during a deploy.

In set process: Promote; Approval required

A set has been created for a promotion and is locked. The set needs an approval before processing can start.
