Selection Criteria for Host Explorer Copy

When using Host Explorer to copy datasets or members to the same or another z/OS host, you can use selection criteria like those in File-AID Search/Update to control what data gets copied and whether updates or other processing options occur. For more information on copying datasets or members using Host Explorer, refer to the Topaz Workbench Host Explorer User Guide. Note: A Topaz Workbench license or a File-AID/MVS license is required to copy VSAM data. In addition to a Topaz Workbench license, a File-AID/MVS license is required on each host involved in copying with selection criteria from one host to another.

To use selection criteria for Host Explorer copy

1. Following the instructions in the Topaz Workbench Host Explorer User Guide, select one or more datasets or members to copy in Host Explorer, then do one of the following:

  • Right-click the selection and select Copy, then right-click the target and select Paste.
  • Press Ctrl+C, then select the target and press Ctrl+V.
  • Right-click the selection and select Copy to.
  • Drag the selection and drop it on the target.

The Copy to Host dialog box or Copy to Dataset dialog box appears and lists the resources to be copied.
2. Optionally select and/or configure a target host and rename one or more target datasets or members.
3. In the Options box, select the option to be applied. Available options vary by resource type. For more information, refer to the Topaz Workbench Host Explorer User Guide.
4. Click the Selection Criteria tab.
5. Select Copy all records, Use selection criteria below, or Use selection criteria dataset (member), then continue as follows:

  • If you selected Copy all records, no selection criteria will be applied. Go to step 13.
  • If you selected Use selection criteria below, go to step 6.
  • If you selected Use selection criteria dataset (member) and have selection criteria stored on the mainframe, go to step 10.

6. Click Add then select Add Condition (AND). The Edit Search Criteria dialog box appears. Optionally, you may select Add Update, and the Edit Update Criteria dialog box appears. It is possible to define an unconditional update to your file, which will perform an update to every record in every dataset specified. You may not select Add condition (AND) after you have added an Update criteria, however you may start a new set of conditional updates by using ADD Set (OR).
7. Complete the applicable Edit Search Criteria dialog box or Edit Update Criteria dialog box.
8. After completing the Edit Search Criteria dialog box, if desired, add more selection criteria by clicking Add and doing either of the following:

  • To add an AND condition to the existing search condition, click Add Condition (AND), then complete the Edit Search Criteria dialog box.
  • To create an OR condition, click Add Set (OR), then complete the Edit Search Criteria dialog box.

9. Go to step 11.
10. Enter a dataset and member in the Use selection criteria dataset (member) field, select one from the drop down list, or click Browse then browse to and select the desired dataset and member containing your stored mainframe selection criteria.
11. In the PDS record processing options box, from the When records match criteria list, select Copy the entire member to copy all records in a member, or select Copy selected records only to copy only those records that match the specified criteria.
12. Select the Process as JCL checkbox, if desired, to treat JCL continuation lines as one statement in 80-byte PDS members, thus searching the entire JCL statement (JOB, EXEC, DD, etc.) for the selection criteria.
13. If desired, select the Run in background checkbox. The copy operation will run in the background to allow for other foreground processing. When processing is finished or canceled, a dialog box appears with a link to the Copy to Host or Copy to Dataset dialog box with summary results.
14. Click Copy. Processing can be suspended by clicking Pause, and then option settings can be changed before clicking Restart. The status of each copy appears in the Status column. The Progress view shows the status if the operation is running in the background.

  • Hover over the Status column to get detailed information on the status. Alternatively, click Details to open the Details dialog box, which displays a summary of the results without the need to hover.
  • When copying multiple resources, if some are not successful, consider selecting the successful resources and clicking Remove to remove them from the display. Then make any corrections to the remaining resources and click Restart to attempt the copy operation again.

16. To re-run a particular copy with selection criteria operation, double-click the corresponding entry in the Event History view.
