AE migration option

Relevant to you?

These options are intended to enable an installation migrating to ThruPut Manager Automated Edition to continue to use their existing JES2 settings to constrain their batch load.

If your installation uses any of the following JES2 settings to control batch job selection, you should consider using the AE Migration Options:

  • JOBCLASS (JES2 initialization statement)
    • XEQCOUNT
    • QHELD
  • $TJOBCLASS (JES2 operator command)
    • XEQCOUNT
    • XEQMEMBER
    • QAFF
    • QHELD
  • $TSRVCLASS (JES2 operator command)
    • QAFF

Furthermore, if JES2 initiator settings have been used to control the number of jobs of a particular job class that may run on a system (including none), AE Migrations Options can be deployed to provide similar control.

How does it work?

For every job managed by SLM (Service Level Manager), SLM retains knowledge of the job class and service class that would have been used by the job when it was not SLM managed.  These are termed the "original job class" and the "original service class".  They reflect the values as they were when the job was requeued for execution after ThruPut Manager analysis and therefore include any changes made using JAL (Job Action Language).

You specify the AE Migration Options that you wish to enable in the SLM Policy.

For Original Job Class

XEQCOUNT and XEQMEMBER

XEQCOUNT is a parameter on both the JES2 JOBCLASS initialization statement and the $TJOBCLASS command.  XEQMEMBER is a parameter on the $TJOBCLASS command only.  They set limits on the number of executing jobs for the JESplex and specified JESplex member(s).

When this AE Migration Option is selected, SLM will ensure that these maximums are honored for the combined total of non-SLM managed jobs in that class and SLM jobs for which it is the original job class.  None of these jobs will be selected if the maximum would be exceeded.

QAFF

QAFF is a parameter on the JES2 $TJOBCLASS command and is used to limit the selection of the jobs in the class to a subset of the members of the JESplex. When this AE Migration Option is selected, SLM jobs will only be selected on a given member of the JESplex if permitted by the current QAFF setting for the original job class for the job.

QHELD

QHELD is a parameter on both the JES2 JOBCLASS initialization statement and the $TJOBCLASS command.  When set to "Yes", no jobs in that class will be selected on any member of the JESplex.

When this AE Migration Option is selected, SLM jobs will only be selected if permitted by the current QHELD setting for the original job class for the job.

Note: do not confuse QHELD with the JOBCLASS HOLD parameter which has a different function.

JES2 initiator count

Many installations control batch by job class using the class settings on available initiators.

For each JES2 job class, SLM tracks how many started, non-halted initiators reference that job class.  JES2 class groups are supported.

When this AE Migration Option is selected, SLM uses the initiator count for a given class as a maximum limit on the combined total of executing jobs on the local JESplex member of non-SLM managed jobs in that class and SLM jobs for which it is the original job class.  None of these jobs will be selected on the local member if the maximum would be exceeded.

Important

If the original job class has been set to MODE=WLM, this option is ignored for that class.

For original service class

QAFF

QAFF is a parameter on the JES2 $TSRVCLASS command that is used to limit the selection of the jobs in the service class to a subset of the members of the JESplex when the jobs are in a job class defined as MODE=WLM.

When this AE Migration Option is selected, SLM jobs will only be selected on a given member of the JESplex if permitted by the current QAFF setting for the original service class for the job.

Important

The use of the QAFF parameter is only allowed by JES2 if the operator has used the $TSRVCLASS command to mark the service class as "PERMANENT".  When an SLM policy is loaded, if no service classes have been marked in JES2 as permanent, SLM will ignore this AE Migration Option and issue an appropriate warning message.

Setup considerations

By default, all AE Migration Options are disabled.  In the SLM Policy you can selectively enable the options that are required to support your environment.
