Purpose of ThruPut Manager

ThruPut Manager is an z/OS JES2 datacenter automation tool, designed to improve the management of your installation's batch processing. The batch job stream (or any selected portion) is analyzed by ThruPut Manager to determine which set of installation-defined rules, specified through a ThruPut Manager Action Language, are applicable. A number of automatic actions are then taken by ThruPut Manager.

One important aspect of ThruPut Manager is that your installation can present one class structure to users while using an entirely different structure to run jobs. You can have a simple job class structure for your users, stated in terms of user requirements such as fast service for some jobs.

Through JAL, incoming jobs are separated into classes which reflect the aspects of the job's profile in which the installation is most interested. Initiators can then be deployed to process those classes effectively. You can be totally confident of the accuracy of your class profile. Since the classes were assigned automatically following your installation rules, the normal problems with user-requested classes are totally eliminated.

When exception handling is required, the distribution of jobs among these classes reveals accurate information which helps when making decisions. You can anticipate the effects of running the batch load in the system. This helps you determine things such as the best resource distribution and the mix of initiator classes, in order to optimize ThruPut.

Optional features of ThruPut Manager, such as Job Binding Services, totally eliminate any operator intervention when jobs are associated with particular resources. A good example is jobs that depend on the availability of an online database.

Through a concept known as Deferred Processing, jobs which are submitted well ahead of the requested execution time (such as requests for overnight processing) can be grouped together. Operations can ensure that Volume Lists are produced close to the job's actual execution time, thereby reflecting the latest catalog information.

Since ThruPut Manager classifies jobs in the batch job stream, users do not have to know the attributes comprising each execution class. ThruPut Manager selects and processes jobs based on a set of rules defined by your installation.

Users also benefit from the extensive analysis which ThruPut Manager performs to determine job classes, because this means that JCL errors which normally would not be detected until execution time are now found immediately.
