S – Select for Edit

The S (Select) command invokes the editor that is applicable for the module, and it only works for modules at the update level, at the bottom of the Change Cycle.

Various editors can be invoked by the S operation. For example, if the module is in a PDS, the standard ISPF editor is invoked. If it is an Adabas/Natural module, the Natural editor is invoked. For a CATELON module, TDF is invoked. If it’s a C program in an HFS file, OEdit is invoked.

Select May Invoke Checkout Automatically

If the module has not been Checked out (that is, the OP code is blank), the S operation will do the Checkout first, then invoke Edit.

Doing Checkouts Before Select

For several modules, it is more efficient to Checkout everything first, then Select.

Edit is Invalid at Upper Change Cycle Levels

ISPW, working together with the Site’s security software, protect modules at higher (controlled) levels in the Change Cycle so they can’t be modified.
