Dataset Utility panel

The Dataset Utility screen has two areas: the upper area displays the Dataset utility options, and the lower area is used to specify data set and catalog names.

Important

Option A now includes allocating SMS data sets (formerly option M).

Use the VSAM utility (option 3.5) to allocate IAM files.

Field Descriptions

OPTION

Enter one of the following option codes and a valid data set name in the Dataset name field:

A - Allocate SEQ/PDS data set, including SMS data set (Allocate New Dataset screen (A))

B - Allocate BDAM Dataset (Allocate BDAM Dataset (B))

C - Catalog data set (Catalog dataset (C))

S - Dataset information - short (Short Dataset Information Screen (S))

BLANK - Display data set information (Dataset information screens (BLANK))

D - Delete dataset or zFS file (Delete dataset (D))

R - Rename Dataset or zFS file (Rename Dataset (R))

U - Uncatalog data set (Uncatalog-dataset)

F - Free unused space (Free-unused-space)

G - Define generation data group (Define-Generation-Data-Group-panel)

As listed in Dataset Utility Option Code Limitations, some options can be used with data sets of all access methods; others can be used only with specific data sets.

Specify Dataset or zFS Path Information:

Dataset or path

Specify the data set or path name. Use the naming conventions described in Specifying a data set name and Specifying a zFS Pathname.

You can enter a pattern dataset or path name in this field to display a list of data sets from which you can make a selection. A pattern dataset name or mask consists of explicit characters or a combination of explicit and pattern characters. See Pattern data set names for a complete description.

Pattern characters are valid in the Dataset name field for options D, R, U, F, S, and BLANK.

Enter the FILELIST primary command or blank out the Dataset Name field to display the Last Referenced File List. For more information, see Last Referenced File List.

Volume serial

Specify the volume serial of the non-catalog direct access device that contains the data set.

Specify the location with a specific volume serial number or with a generic group name.

Important

File-AID displays an error message when both the Volume serial field and the Catalog name fields contain data, except for option C (catalog).

Specify Model Dataset Information:

Model dataset name

Use the Model dataset name field when allocating a new data set with the same attribute values as an existing data set. The attributes from the model dataset are displayed on the data set allocation screen.

When a model dataset is not specified, the allocation screen displays the attributes of the most recently referenced data set.

Pattern characters are valid in the Model dataset name field for all access methods. See Pattern data set Names.

Specify Catalog to use if other than Default System Catalog:

Catalog name

Specify the location here with a generic group name or in the Volume serial field with a specific volume serial number.

Catalog password

Specify the password if the catalog is password protected.
