Renaming a DBMS Instance

This feature can be used to correct the situation in which a DBMS Instance name was misspelled in a DB2 collection.

The problem

= 4 && typeof(BSPSPopupOnMouseOver) == 'function') BSPSPopupOnMouseOver(event);" class="BSSCPopup" onclick="BSSCPopup('DBMS_Instance.htm');return false;">DBMS

instances can be collected from source (Assembler, COBOL, or PL/I), CICS, or JCL collections. In DB2 collections, however, the admin must manually enter the DBMS instance name when setting up the DB2 collection, and this information is not verified. As a result, the DB2 entities collected by the DB2 collection will not link to the DBMS instance collected by the source, CICS, or JCL collection. This can cause several problems:

  • Incomplete structure charts
  • Incomplete impact analysis
  • Duplicate entities from the same DB2 subsystem

The value for DBMS instance specified in the Collection dialog box must be correct or DB2 entities will not be linked with source, CICS, and/or JCL entities.

Recognizing the problem when it occurs

If the DBMS instance name is not correct, you may:

  • Get a structure chart that ends at a DBMS instance.
  • Get dead ends at a DBMS instance.

When either of these situations occurs, you can verify that the DBMS instance name is not correct by doing a search on DBMS instance. If you have done both DB2 and other collections that collect DBMS instances, your search will return two or more DBMS instances, one of which has a different Location property.

Resolving the problem

When this happens, it is important to rename the incorrect DBMS instance to the correct name so DB2 entities can be linked with source, JCL, and CICS entities. Without this link, impact analysis, structure charts, and other Metadata Analyzer functionality will not be complete. For example, the structure chart will end at the DBMS instance.

To rename a DBMS instance

Only admins can rename a DBMS instance.

  1. In the Entities view, select the DBMS instance.
  2. Do one of the following:
    • From the Edit menu, select Rename.
    • Right-click the entity and select Rename.
  3. In the Rename DBMS Instance dialog box, type the correct name for the DBMS instance.
  4. Click OK. The DBMS instance is renamed and is merged with the DBMS instance that is in the same Location.
  5. To fix the original error in the DB2 collection, edit the collection to rename the DBMS instance name.

Tip: For faster searching, add an asterisk to the end of your partial query. Example: cert*
