Sample Dataset Parameters

Detailed descriptions and default values for the parameters associated with the allocation of a Strobe sample file are provided.

Dataset parameter

Description

Default

DSNAME=STROBE

Specifies the high-level qualifiers of the sample data set name. This value can be blank or when combined with the suffix parameter DSNSUFX=, contain up to 26 characters. The following four variables can be used as separate data set nodes, delimited by a single period:

  • &LPARNAME: Indicates the Logical Partition Name. It generates the one-to-eight-character LPAR name in the data set name. For example, CW09.
  • &SYSTEM: generates the one-to-eight-character system name in the data set name. For example, CW09.
  • &SYSTIME: Generates a seven-character time in the format Thhmmss. For example, T083222.
  • &SYSDATE: Generates an eight-character date in the format Dyyyyddd. For example, D2017123
  • &RELEASE: Generates a five-character Strobe release number in the format Rnnnn. For example, R1802

    Important

    The DSNAME operand on the ADD and CHANGE operations can override this DSNAME value.

None

DSNSUFX=

Specifies a low-order qualifier (suffix) for the sample data set name. Valid values contain from one to eight characters.

None

DSN_SPACE

Specifies the Strobe sample data set space requirements

SPACE_UNIT=XXX
PRIMARY=nnnn
SECONDARY=nnnn

where XXX is TRK (tracks), CYL (cylinders), or BLK (block size) allocations, and nn is 1- 9999. Note that BLK is the block size from the BLKSIZE parameter (defined below).

DSN_SPACE
SPACE_UNIT=BLK
PRIMARY=1024
SECONDARY=3072
END

BLKSIZE=8192

Specifies the block size for Strobe sample data sets. System administrators should check the available storage on the systems where Strobe is running and increase this parameter to as high a value as possible. Valid values are 8192 to 32760.

8192

BUFNO=2

Specifies the number of buffers assigned to the sample data set. The buffer pool is allocated in the Measurement Services address space above the 16-megabyte line. System administrators should check the available storage on the systems where Strobe is running and increase this parameter to as high a value as possible. Valid values are 2 to 255.

2

RETPD=

Specifies the number of days that sample data sets are kept on the host. Use RETPD only if you use DFSMS to manage your sample data sets. Valid values are 1 to 9999.

None

ARCVID=MIGRAT

Specifies the volume serial number used by DFHSM, or its equivalent, to indicate that a data set has been archived; for example, DFHSM’s MIGRAT. Strobe uses this parameter in conjunction with the STRMGR parameter (defined below) to determine how archived sample data sets are processed. If you use two separate volumes (for example, MIGRAT1 indicating DASD, MIGRAT2 indicating tape), you still must specify MIGRAT, which is the default.

Important

If CA Disk and the Locate Intercept are installed, then the Locate SVC will return MIGRAT even though externally it is cataloged to ARCIVE. Therefore, MIGRAT must be specified.

MIGRAT

STRMGR=HSM

Identifies the DASD management system installed at your site. Strobe uses this parameter in conjunction with ARCVID parameter above to determine how archived sample data sets are processed. Valid values are HSM, DMS, DMS2, SAMS, CADISK, FDR, and OTHER. The default is HSM with an archive volume of MIGRAT. Specify the value as follows:

  • If DFHSM is installed, specify HSM (default). Strobe HDELETEs archived sample data sets and allocates new ones.
  • If DMS release 8.1.7 or more current installed, specify DMS2. Strobe HDELETEs archived sample data sets and allocates new ones.
  • If DMS release 8.1.6 or less current is installed, specify DMS. Strobe un-catalogs the sample data set and allocates a new data set.
  • If SAMS is installed, specify SAMS. Strobe HDELETEs archived sample data sets and allocates new ones.
  • If CA Disk is installed, specify CADISK. Strobe HDELETEs archived sample data sets and allocates new ones.
  • If FDR is installed and supports HDELETE, specify FDR. Strobe HDELETEs archived sample data sets and allocates new ones.
  • Otherwise, specify OTHER. Strobe forces a recall of archived data sets.

Important

If your site uses FDR as the DASD management system with the defaults for MIGRAT and RECALL, place the  high-level qualifier for sample data sets on FDR’s EXCLUDE list so that the data sets are not archived by FDR.

HSM with an archive volume of MIGRAT

DATACLAS=

Specifies the SMS DATACLAS parameter used during sample data set allocation.

None

MGMTCLAS=

Specifies the SMS MGMTCLAS parameter used during sample data set allocation. There is no default.

None

STORCLAS=

Specifies the SMS STORCLAS parameter to be used during sample data set allocation.

None

UNIT=SYSDA

Specifies the direct access unit name used to catalog sample data sets. The UNIT operand on the ADD and CHANGE operations can be used to override the specified value.

SYSDA

VOLUME=

Specifies the direct access volume serial number for sample data sets. Valid values must be one to six characters. The VOLUME operand on the ADD and CHANGE request for the Strobe measurement can override it.

None
